Reddit is weird sometimes. Also Americans are weird. No-one from any other country would post on a global social network and not even entertain the possibility of shipping globally.

My phone is not overheating. My direct touch is working. I can interact with my notifications. My iMessage and Facetime aren't randomly disabling themselves. I'm even (knock on wood) getting notifications reliably. So, I'm turning off developer beta updates. If something new and exciting exists in that beta, I look forward to trying it when I'm suitably convinced it won't do horrible things to my phone, which might just be when it's released.

@mcourcel@mstdn.ca I can't believe I'm about to defend Apple here, but here goes. At the time, lightning might have been the best. USB C either didn't exist or hadn't taken off at all in 2012. Even in 2016 when they went all the way to USB C on the Mac, people weren't ready for it. I only got to the phont of having mostly USB C cables and accessories within the last four or five years, and that was because I got a new laptop and an Android phone. I was ahead of the curve compared to 90% of the people I know. A lot of people in 2024 still have no USB C devices whatsoever, but at least it's a lot more common now. So as much as Apple faced criticism from tech people for not going USB C earlier, they probably would have faced just as much criticism from the non-tech people for switching the charge port twice in less than 10 years.

@masonasons@fwoof.space But you pay a lot! These headsets are expensive and they don't even sound that great for what you pay for them. The microphone holds most of the appeal.

@masonasons@fwoof.space Also good luck pairing it with a new dongle without sighted assistance. If I can work around an accessibility issue I try not to make too much noise about it, but I've been reliably told you can't on this one.

@masonasons@fwoof.space Hmm, the lack of multidevice support is really unfortunate. I like being able to wear the virtuoso and use my phone at the same time. I used to also have a little AptX low latency receiver that brought the audio from my line mixer into the wired jack. So having all three of those going at once was really a big deal; it gave me my entire desk setup portably plus my phone. At this point I think I'll just use my Rode Wireless Pro as a microphone and use either the AirPods or the low-latency Bluetooth things for output. I can't listen to my phone at the same time, but there are some ways to solve that. I know your original point was that I can use that headset on the phone, but there's no equalizer there, and having a long dongle sticking out of the phone just makes me worry about dropping the phone dongle-side down.

@masonasons@fwoof.space You used to be against Corsair, has this headset resolved your issues with the Virtuoso? I've mostly gone off the idea of getting a wireless headset at all now, given the other options I have, but it's good to know what's out there.

It's been close to a year since I finally got a USB C iPhone, and I still keep coming to more realizations about the possibilities that arise from all my devices sharing a common standard. It really speaks to just how limiting lightning was, and how we all just went along with it because nothing better existed at the time.
The latest realization: I could find a good wired computer headset and use that instead of cheap wired earbuds. I use earbuds for the relatively good microphone quality, and because they don't sound too terrible when listening to other voices, but I'm starting to dislike them more and more. If I can find a good set of USB C earbuds or an over-the-ear USB headset, especially if the cable is USB C and has a relatively small plug, I would be willing to try replacing earpods.
I'm also just getting frustrated at the limitations that come from trying to find a 3.5mm adapter to suit every occasion. Android still doesn't power the Apple adapters properly, but most of the other adapters have more microphone leakage, or they don't support volume control, or they have too much microphone noise. It's starting to be a major annoyance, and I don't like having to think about this stuff, so I just fall back to AirPods now because the output quality is significantly better and the microphone quality is still manageable for voice. But we've had cheap computer microphone options for years, and I wonder if we can adapt that to all mobile devices now.

I usually shop at Walmart instead of our local Loblaw store, and now I remember why. Compared to Walmart (which already doesn't have in-store prices on Instacart), Superstore has my typical items marked up anywhere from 20 to 50%. Some of the cheaper items have gone up in price by almost 50% from where they were a couple of years ago. I'll be shopping there as rarely as possible now. It's not like Walmart is a well-intentioned charitable company, but at this point it feels like everything is evil and I'll take whichever one charges me the least.
