everything written about the security impacts of software dependency management immediately becomes trite the moment it was written unless it can answer the question of "what can we do about it that doesn't involve ether every maintainer ever burning out from having to reimplement the whole pie or shipping the pie in the standard library?". i super do not want to read the eleventh snarky blog post this week that points out that untrusted dependencies are bad without giving any suggestions for how to unfuck the situation. i'm seriously considering just writing off language-specific package managers entirely in favor of having a big distribution that can audit new versions of shit.

@nyanbinary i feel like this could be thwarted pretty easily by the security cameras just not processing the QR codes or not sending any requests? like i get why this sort of thing would work if you where targeting smartphones since they usually load the website in order to give you more info in the camera app but if the security cameras don't do that then i'm not sure why this would work. I might just not understand how QR codes work.

@cobra the process of interrogating an object to glean insight from its form can be applied regardless of if the object had any particular meaning encoded into its form when being created. i won't contest that this process is much easier and more coherent when some meaning is encoded on purpose, but that doesn't change the fact that it could be applied to objects which do not.

The Morbid Zoo made a video about the metaverse that i think works as a good companion piece to Folding Ideas' video about the same. I think where FI is really good at capturing how the specific incarnation of metaverses that happened during my lifetime where conceptual failures, tMZ is just fantastic at getting to the root cause of why anyone could've thought that bullshit was a good idea in the first place. like it's the diference between "text on a rewritable 2d surfece is just the maximally information-dense medium that we can invent right now" and "trying to make a medium that conveys maximum-reality rather then maximum information-density or maximum fitness-to-artistic-intent is a sign of this specific ideological failure". both analyses are important!

@kimapr@ublog.kimapr.net okay but even if that’s true (which i’m not convinced of), having a track record of writing security libraries with known hypothetical security flaws and not addressing them because you don’t think they matter isn’t very good. they only have to be wrong about the impact of a known flaw once, and they could easily prevent having to be right 100% of the time by fixing flaws when they are found rather then not doing that.
