I research the genetics behind brain ageing. My work includes phenomics (automated high-throughput behavioural phenotyping), systems genetics (multi-omics and quantitative trait locus mapping) as well as molecular pathway modelling (using disease maps, Boolean models and network analysis). All focussed on the question: how does neuron function change with age?

Wonderful to see this study published!
A deep dive into the genetics of polyglucosan bodies in the brain.

Especially rewarding for me as the work began during our research Summer School (https://sysgenschool.org/) in 2022 - amazing to see how this collaboration has flourished and expanded since then!

Rtrack microtutorial - 1. Plotting

Rtrack has single-command built-in plotting for search paths (a, b), density maps (c, d), variable overviews (e, f) and strategies (more on that to come). Quick, easy and customisable (b, d, f). These plots can all be saved in publication-quality vector format.

English not your language of choice? No worries, just hack the plot with a few simple parameters and set up labels the way you need them (f).

Rtrack 2.0.4 is on CRAN. If you work in the experimental behaviour field - this is for you. The latest update brings more flexibility for experiment design and data visualisation alongside the usual robustness improvements. If you already use Rtrack - enjoy the improvements! If you are not yet using Rtrack - check out what you have been missing...

@AlSweigart@mastodon.social Can't an LLM also just write a test suite (and explain/comment the code if necessary)?

@dcz@fosstodon.org Also true. It has been said that the best person to teach something is someone who just learnt it. I guess authors can get too close to the work that they don't anticipate real-world user problems well.

Is it a universal truth that any button/link/menu item syaing "Help" does not lead to anything helpful?

You'd think that the authors of a software would be the people best placed to know how to solve problems related to their work. It is essentially always the worst place to seek assistance though.

The power of modern LLMs is fed by the rich content that has been available online. Blogs, essays, forums etc. are the sources of primary content, but as everyone moves to using only LLM searches, there will be diminishing incentive for people to produce such primary content. Now, some web content is actually being generated by LLMs - and that trend seems set to continue. That means the LLMs of the future will, at some point, find their training material to be predominantly LLM-generated...
