Fun fact, the etymologically correct English term for people from Deutschland would be “dutch”.

In medieval and antique Europe, royalty and nobility in general was often expected to fight on the battlefield. It was only in early modern times when gunpowder and pike squares started making heavily armored knights and especially heavy cavalry obsolete that this fundamentally changed.


That said, LotR is indeed rather idealized, and it definitely follows ancient tropes of beings who are better than humans in every way and yet can and will breed with humans occasionally (thus Aragorn and Elrond).

I like ebooks as a concept, but I hate walled-garden stuff like the Amazon Kindle. There’s probably devices that are okay, I’ve just not been particularly motivated to find one of those. I buy most of my books secondhand anyway, chances are that I’d only read legally free (e.g. fanfiction) and pirated books on my ereader.


That said, I haven’t seen much in way of heated (verbal) battles about this. I don’t hang out in book enthusiast spaces, though.

1200p. 16:9 is a stupid choice for computer displays (not saying that you, specifically, are stupid; the selection is rather limited if you want to buy something with a different display ratio).

Personally, I never cared about the cheating aspect, I was never particularly good at gaming and I’d definitely prefer cheating over not finishing a game or trying to bruteforce whatever I’m stuck on for 10 hours. The issue is that looking up stuff casually like many people (including me) do today has a high risk of reducing the fun for no real reason. And I feel like games today tend to be easier and less grindy than they used to be in the dial-up days, too, so there’s also less reason to look anything up in the first place.

The real easy mode is looking up stuff on the 'net. It might be subtle at first, maybe you just looked up something when you were genuinely stuck, but before you know it you’re just looking up stuff because you’re impatient or don’t want to take notes yourself.


Though I guess there’s games that are mostly about getting the timing right. Like I don’t think the internet helps much with beating the early Super Mario sidescrollers.

Is it, though? If there’s a non-government person who has the means to protect themselves against fucking missile strikes, one of the richest people on the planet seems like a likely candidate.
