People in neon clothing doing aerobics to a chiptune rendition of "Pink Pony Club" may be a peak #EMFcamp moment.

@atax1a@infosec.exchange @europlus@social.europlus.zone @davidgerard@circumstances.run They think they've invented AGI because they also regard people as things to prompt repeatedly until they get the output they want. See also pickup artistry, virtually all of modern sales/marketing/management, and "Maybe later" consent dialogs.

@mahryekuh@hachyderm.io @w8l@scalie.zone Thank you, I just tried out the High Contrast mode in Win10 and there are certainly things I like about it (Win11 looks even better but my Windows PC is too old for it). Some fairly subtle hints suddenly become a lot more visible. Will explore further! [I admit I'm still fond of the basic UI elements from the Win95 to Win2000 era: straightforward shading and highlighting to help show what's interactive, while being neither oversimplified nor flashy for its own sake]

@grishka True, and they also put a small shadow under the windows. You can tell they wanted to make UI elements more obvious but didn't have the graphical capabilities yet.

@mahryekuh@hachyderm.io Thank you for saying it. I feel like there's something elitist and gatekeep-y about that sort of design trend, a sort of "of course users with *taste* will easily understand my elegant, minimalist vision". Meanwhile I'm over here thinking "yeah, the computer industry already did flat design back in the 80s, and everybody got rid of it with great relief the moment they had more than 2 to 4 colours and a handful of pixels to work with"

@chiffchaff@tech.lgbt @davidgerard@circumstances.run An interesting thing to ponder! It certainly seems plausible that wise old geeks with backgrounds in industry might have brought some cross-pollination of ideas. And I agree, it feels healing to the soul to do something that clearly needed doing, resulting in an immediate and unarguable improvement in the state of the world. I currently have a part-time job doing small building-maintenance tasks, and it feels more useful than some of my tech roles.

@chiffchaff@tech.lgbt @davidgerard@circumstances.run Parcel sorting sounds nice. I'm hoping the job interview was like: "So, are you good at getting packets to their destination reliably?" "Like you wouldn't believe"

@cms@fed.beatworm.co.uk @quite@mstdn.social @robpike@hachyderm.io It's kind of like a sugar-based equivalent of millefiori glassworking. The idea of artisan keyboardsmiths hand-rolling keytops with this technique feels like a fascinating glimpse into some alternate clockpunk timeline.

@Foritus@toot.dusepo.co.uk I wonder if the disclaimer actually works in their favour or not, given that it rather implies they know full well their bot gives terrible advice and let it answer questions anyway...

@Extelec@mstdn.social The disclaimer implies Screwfix are fully aware that it gives stupid advice and keep using it anyway, which makes me wonder what would actually happen if they tried to rely on the disclaimer as a defence.

Screwfix have got an LLM answering questions about their products now. Of course, it's posting confident, authoritative-sounding, and completely wrong answers. About electrical wiring. What could possibly go wrong?
