After at least 20 years of going all digital, I wanted to do some film photography again so I got one of those cheap Kodak H35N half-frame cameras. I wrote about the experience on my website.

It was fun! While I certainly won't stop digital photography, film photography is back for me. I see no reason why analog and digital can't coexist!

Today is one of those lovely days where I have the pleasure of using this windows 98 machine to program EPROMs. Despite being kept off for months at a time, it’s always instantly usable for the intended task, zero « yes or maybe later » questions or other unsolicited nonsense.

In a series of posts on my website, I am exploring the mostly unknown world of french educational PC/DOS games that were used in Quebec (Canada) schools at the end of the 80's / early 90's.

In this 7th update, I present Orientation Spatiale, a game for preschool children to practise positional words. Published by CRAPO inc.

I recently began broadcast listening (BCL/SWL) and to my surprise most broadcast radio stations still send physical cards by mail! (Or at least, stations in Japan?)

I already received many cards which I have scanned and posted here:

EN: https://www.raphnet.net/radio/bcl/index_en.php
FR: https://www.raphnet.net/radio/bcl/index.php

This is so fun! Receiving those cards feels a bit like unlocking achievements in a game, but you get a nice post card instead. Wouldn't it be great if games used postcards for achievements or completion?

Even to this day, weather images and maps are transmitted over short wave radio! When I heard about that, I just had to try! From Japan, I received images from Japan, Korea, China, Hawaii and Australia! There is even a newspaper transmission! It's nice to see simple systems like this still in action.

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space Yes, it is hilarious! It's probably an unfortunate accident, the person who though of it possibly knew only French or very little English...

It amazes me how often I see texture^W fake brick wallpaper appearing to have been incorrectly installed. Here the dark fake bricks shadows makes it look as if they are lighted from above. But then, also based on the shadows, the white bricks are somehow lighted from below? This feels… wrong.

I published the schematics and gerbers for making this DIP EEPROM / FLASH to PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 game PCB.

This was the first step of a project where the ultimate goal was to produce new cards for publishing homebrew games. While I abandoned the project before reaching the goal of having a slim design similar to original games, I believe this can still be useful.

https://www.raphnet.net/electronique/tg16_pcb/index_en.php

The homebrew game shown here is HuZERO by @chriscovell@techhub.social

Every time I use this machine to program an EPROM it puts a smile on my face and I tell myself It’s always a good day when I get to use my win98 machine. Even if left off for months, everything works normally - no background updates, no unusual sluggishness, no “now or remind me later” annoying offers or anything getting in the way of doing what I want to do immediately!
