As reference for anyone who doesn't have accounts on Bluesky and/or Mastodon this is what their layouts look like:

@tealk IMO Friendica is overloaded. It has so many "moving parts" it's really hard to redesign it. I mean, we could get rid of that right sidebar. It already disappears on narrower screens. The "Frio" theme doesn't even have it. And/or I could selectively hide things in it to pare it down to something more like Bluesky's right-hand sidebar. I made the drop-down user menu stuck open, I could turn that back into a drop-down and move the left sidebar up.

Vier Facelift? Before I started work on BookLook the plan was to just create a modern UI style for the "Vier" theme along the same lines of what I did with Bookface for the "Frio" theme. I didn't really get all that far with the one for Vier, but it was pretty functional - at least on desktop. I hadn't thought about the mobile UI. Instead of Facebook this "Modern" style takes design cues from both Mastodon and Bluesky. Anyway, I pulled that stylesheet into Friendica 2026.08-dev and now I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and finish it? I'm not sure how Vier users feel about it. Is there any interest in this? As for what's left to do, the two sections you see above are the only ones I finished styling. Though the layout seems to work pretty well across most of the Friendica. I'd also need to figure out the responsive design including how this transforms into a mobile UI for phones and tablets, and of course make a "dark mode" variant. Not sure if it would get into the Friendica core code or not, but if there's interest I can work on finishing it and at least release it on my own repository like I do with Bookface. @developers @helpers

@ruud @daniel I don't know of anything specifically for the next release. There was a project to allow using a Postgres database, but it never got completed: github.com/friendica/friendica… There is also an ongoing "Work In Progress" to refactor the database: github.com/friendica/friendica… The latest piece of which is draft "Proof of Concept" PR regarding database abstraction: github.com/friendica/friendica…

@wilhelm@fedia.social It would be much more common for a mobile UI on a phone to have a full-width menu like this:

There's already a check in Nav.php for whether or not the current user has any additional identities so I was thinking of using that to swap out the label and icon so it shows a user icon with a "+" and says "Add Account" but if they already have one (or more) it would be the arrows and "Switch Accounts" (or does that sound too formal and businesslike for Friendica, perhaps "Add Profile" and "Switch Profiles" would better?).

@helpers @developers If you weren't aware there are two sets of Action Buttons, one for Desktop and one for Mobile. This is likely legacy code from before we could rely on CSS media queries for responsive layouts. Anyway, I'm working on a PR that would eliminate one of those sets of Action Buttons and just use a single set for both desktop and mobile devices. Similarly there are two User Menus, a drop-down one for desktop and a slide-in one for mobile. I'm planning to get rid of one of those and only have a single menu regardless of what device you are using. That dropdown menu works just fine on mobile as a dropdown menu. It's already coded to auto-scroll any overflow. But I can also add styling to make it work as a slide-in menu panel on mobile. So my question for everyone is: Do you want the mobile menu to slide-in like it currently does or do you want it to be a drop-down like on desktop?

CoverPhoto Add-on Version 1.3 This is a very minor update but it fixes one little annoying issue. If you hit the "Delete" button for a photo in your profile in Frio it would add your coverphoto to the delete confirmation modal. Now it shouldn't add it to any page with ?mode=none on the end. I also updated the compatibility info in the README to reflect that this add-on works with Friendica 2024.12, 2025.07-rc, 2026.01, 2026.05, and 2026.08-dev. gitlab.com/randompenguin/cover…
