Ever wondered how to explain differential privacy's guarantees to end users?

Today at the DP session at #usesec23 I'll present on explaining epsilon to people contributing data. Please join if you're here!

Joint work w/ @masmart@hci.social, Rachel Cummings, Gabriel Kaptchuk, & Elissa M. Redmiles

I'm conducting a study on privacy-preserving data analysis & hoping to see if folks here are available to participate. Participants must be at least 18 yrs old, based in the U.S., and have experience analyzing data.

As a thank you, we will send you a gift card -- $25 for participating and up to an additional $25 can be earned during the study.

Please dm or email (priyankan [at] u.northwestern.edu) me for more info/the signup link!

Boosts very appreciated :)

@ndiakopoulos@hci.social A lot of this piece reminds me of the breakdown in communication around the Census Bureau's use of differential privacy...for the 2030 Census I'd be curious to see if risk communication techniques (around privacy, accuracy, etc) are effective

Does anyone know of any statistics describing how quickly/widely #differentialprivacy is being adopted?

Looking for figures that complement @tedted@octodon.social's excellent list of real-world uses (https://desfontain.es/privacy/real-world-differential-privacy.html)

@jordant Sounds interesting! Signed up :) @sohw, @jackbandy, and I co-organize a book club, under Northwestern's HCI+D Center, where we similarly try to look at tech+media through a critical lens. It's led to more than a few inspiring conversations! Since we've been meeting virtually we've been able to welcome folks from outside the Chicago area -- if at all interesting to you, pls let us know if you'd like to join! Here are some books we've read prevously: https://hci.northwestern.edu/news-events/phd-book-club.html

@kgajos@hci.social I remember really loving this paper when @ndiakopoulos@hci.social recommended it to me. Thank you for reminding me of it!

While I imagine these questions can be answered through interviews, where participants would give explicit consent, seems like it would still be useful to think about what it means to research the Fediverse. (Am thinking of a slide deck @cfiesler posted which touched on ethics of researching Twitter, if I remember correctly.) Re conveying data flows: might be helpful to think about how contextual integrity can help strengthen explanations, or how metaphors+diagrams can help (cc @masmart)

Some research questions around privacy in the Fediverse:

- What are people's mental models for how data flows through the Fediverse? When you delete a post, is it deleted across all instances?

- Do people's mental models align with actual data flows?

- How can we improve privacy policies to accurately convey data flows?

These questions came out of a meeting with @andresmh@hci.social to discuss hci.social's privacy policy. We're sharing in case there are jr. grad students looking for privacy projects
