I’ve been on for over three years and I still think the strict chronological timeline sucks. It’s terrible for interaction since you only see the latest things with no comments. I want to see popular things by people I follow, even if they were posted while I was sleeping or picked up steam later. I also want some degree of randomness to introduce new things in my timeline. Yes, I realize this opens the door to evil algorithms. The algorithm can be under my control, it doesn’t have to come from the X/Meta rage optimization teams.

If you like a chronological timeline, great. Enjoy it. It’s not the only way.
