Today I told the kid about genes and explained what they are, in answer to her questions about inherited traits. It was a simplified explanation but still you can see her mind racing. These are some of my favorite moments as a dad.

Assertion: desktop apps should preserve state across reboot where possible.

Having to wipe out multiple desktops containing intermediate work state to do a security update and reboot is no longer a rare occurrence, and the OS should handle it better. macOS restore windows is a good start but needs deeper integration.

Is that a lot?

I complain about lack of engagement on mastodon, but then I look at the engagement on a post like this and it is such garbage that maybe we’re better off not having it.

(The real answer is some kind of quality ranking and filtering of posts, but ~algorithms~)

The Drobo RAID setup has never been matched in any product I’m aware of. It allowed mixing disks of any size. Dynamically replace a disk with larger one and it would rebuild its array to balance the blocks, maintain integrity levels, and use the larger available total size. It was a great consumer-friendly storage product and it’s a shame we can’t have that in any other NAS.

Is it my imagination or is autocorrect getting worse in iOS? I’ve been very frustrated with it lately. So much so that I tried a few third party keyboards. They all require enabling full access (internet connection) to be useful now, which I’m not doing

A typical 486 system has maybe 4MB of RAM. That’s not enough memory to contain the linux kernel. Keeping support for it has been silly for a long time.

iMessage no longer works on my iPad after upgrading to iPadOS 26.4. Cannot log in, even after reboot. Another quality release.

I’ve been on #Mastodon for over three years and I still think the strict chronological timeline sucks. It’s terrible for interaction since you only see the latest things with no comments. I want to see popular things by people I follow, even if they were posted while I was sleeping or picked up steam later. I also want some degree of randomness to introduce new things in my timeline. Yes, I realize this opens the door to evil algorithms. The algorithm can be under my control, it doesn’t have to come from the X/Meta rage optimization teams.

If you like a chronological timeline, great. Enjoy it. It’s not the only way.
