@synlogic4242@social.vivaldi.net Silo had a very slow warmup but I thought it got really good by the second season. Good enough to overlook the horrible pitch-black cinematography in several episodes. They do a good job of ramping up the reveals.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@cultofmac/117045754026473790 Attempting to avoid spoilers for Silo and Peacemaker but 🤷, so don’t read further if you’re concerned. Some shows debut new seasons that undo a big chunk of what was accomplished in the previous season. This is when I check out of the show. #silo and #peacemaker are both shows I thought were great that did this recently. I didn’t make it past episode 1 of the newest season of either one.

We know you had two dozen browser windows open to internal sites while doing work, but we decided to timeout some of them and redirect them in a way that cannot recover the context if you manage to log in again. Hope that doesn’t disrupt your workflow

What’s the sane way to pipe audio from three desktop computers into one pair of stereo speakers? Ideally mixed and low-ish latency. Don’t say Bluetooth.

Guy from one of the big AI companies in a presentation was boasting about writing 90k lines of code in a week, none of it being reviewed, and it’s okay if it’s bad code because we all write bad code and anyway only LLMs will look at it. This is the epitome of coder versus software engineer, except now the coder has a firehose that sprays out code.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@h4ckernews/117004017011678594 It’s true that user reviews are mostly garbage. Some of this can be fixed by adding communication channels between users and developers. Ways to report bugs, get support, and request features would go a long way towards removing bad feedback reviews. Of course most developers are strongly opposed to these because it increases the load on them.

@ewhac@mastodon.social The protection is not absolute, it is a score. But more importantly, it’s not a graph where once you’re in, you are trusted. People would be scored (for you) relative to how many links get from you to them, and how strong those links are. If all your first hop friends know Alice, she will score high. If a set of people distant from you who have low scores are friends with Eve, she’s not going to have a very high score. And when you tag her as a bot, you’ll drag down the scores of all those who linked to her and their other links. At least in theory. I can’t say I put much thought into this and I’m sure it won’t be that simple.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@appleinsider/116975524473168017 I suspect that in the age of AI, trusting that sources are real humans will be a based on a social verification graph. I can vouch that people I personally know are human. They can vouch for people they know. If there were a way to compute the social confidence score of any given poster, it could filter out a lot of bots. You’d think meta would be well-positioned to implement something like this. But instead they’re just going to do the idiotic face scanning thing.

In order to update the navigation software in my wife’s car, I have to connect the car to WiFi. No, not to download the update and install it, that would be silly. Instead it needs to register itself with the manufacturer so that their website allows me to download the update to a USB stick for installation.

@lproven@social.vivaldi.net The assumption here is that companies care about architecture and technical debt. Most care about getting a product out the door and keeping it working well enough that customers keep using it. Technical debt cleanup, good architecture, lack of duplication, etc are all things to enable human developers to function effectively. LLMs don’t complain about bad code, they just keep chugging through it. The context window problem will be overcome by summarizing and delegating to subtasks. It’s still cheaper than paying us to fix it.

@never_released@mastodon.social This would never be a problem on a microkernel. There it would only lock up the Bluetooth server. This would hang the HID server, network server, and audio server. These in turn would cause the a cascade of failures and hangs that bring down all of userspace. But the good news is that the scheduler will remain alive.

People use LLMs as the only tool when it is expensive and unpredictable, instead of using it to build cheap and reliable tools and processes.
