PArtyicipate in collective action, meet your neighbors, unionize, help an immigrant ... what akes a country livable, and a good neighbouring country ( Mexico hears the alarm also) is more community across society.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social I do both. I come from Mexico where voting has been effective lately, because of larger social movements preceding and accompanying candidates. I live in Europe now where I feel the vote is not effective, ie France.
I got to vote as a immigrant in local elections here in Sweden, which is cool, but the emphasis on electoral and representative politics as the only true form of democracy feels odd.
Direct democracy, assemblies, reaching consensus instead of majority rule...

this seems like escapism
in a given country, the form of democracy is what it is. and it certainly will have defects that require addressing to make it better. which requires participation in that form of democracy to address them
in such a respect what does "direct democracy" even mean? you can say that direct democracy is a better system. ok. but it's not the actual system you are currently in. so what's the point? are you substituting daydreaming for living in reality?

In Mexico we have a woman President, parity in congress, much less poor people...because we dared to dream. Direct democracy is in the works, we can revoke politicians mid term, all judges are now elected.
In France Mélenchon promises to end the 5th République if elected, flatten hierarchies.
I am in fact for sorting: a lottery would put regular people in power, renewed often.

of course you can dream. you should dream. but you can't just dream. you need a coherent plant of action. which includes working in the current system, to birth the better system. that's not a suggestion, that's a rock solid aspect of existence. so why are downplaying that, even as you point to people working within the system to get better, in your own examples such as Sheinbaum
also, Melenchon is a fucking idiot. he calls for "diplomacy" instead of arming Ukraine

Much like Bernie wouldnt do as a President in a sane country. Lulla belonged in Prison, Corbyn a dangerous antisemite. And the Squad Mamdani, al Sayed will submit USians to Sharia law. I've heard plenty about Mélenchon. I've also read his program, seen his unwavering commitement to the working class, minorities and Palestine, enough for me.

I hate the extreme rightists just as much as you do, but I'll tell ya, Bernie, in France would NOT be in Melanchon's camp. The US has no real left any longer. Melanchon is an affluent, socially liberal wing of the French left. Even though he's technically not Gauche Caviar, the hypocrisy is too much for me. His 'commitment' as you say is to himself. The 'real left' never had much results anywhere any ways.

I can say that I lived through MORENA-AMLOs ascent in México, and getting similar vibes from LFI-Melenchon.
Same establishment horror to sovereign, lefty politics, similar autocrat accusations, long speeches, same grass roots bases. Political flair.
They in fact know each other and exchange.

it's not a failure of ideology to be such an airhead about what russia represents, it's a failure of basic human intelligence. or perhap to be an entitled, privileged insulated fool blissfully unaware. or perhaps a product of russia's penchance for funding the far right and the far left to destroy countries
