There is no way to get a real screensaver work, prove me wrong. And no one cares if it is the protocol or the implementation. It just works worse than X11 on modest hardware, and people dislike it.

Technically AOSP also runs a Linux kernel. Lineage and Graphene are like this only for compatibility reasons, no one stops them if they decide to fork. And AOSP itself is still not that bad though

I get it with Canonical and Red Hat, but why Linus? What is he doing recently?

Personally I haven’t. While Linux is imperfect, choosing the right distro makes the rest of the experience straightforward. And with it’s whole complexity, I find Linux more user friendly than Windows. Even driver issues, broken shadow file ownership and KDE specifics only made me more confident about my choice to use Linux after I solved everything.

Eliminating some obscure bugs from C code is not worth intruducing a lot of new bugs. GNU coreutils have been used and polished for so long, that it would be far more effective just to fix the issues as they reveal right in the original code. If rewriting removes one kind of bugs while introducing another - then what’s the whole point? I cannot imagine obviously buggy code from 2020s being more secure than code that has been around since previous century. Again, even if Rust for real is a better solution for security reasons, the way it is being developed and shipped is not how one makes software more secure. Disregarding the license, uutils look like something pursuing hype, not strategical benefits.

You’re both right and not exactly. I use Fedora as my main OS and enjoy it, but I never even try installing it on a secondary cheap laptop. Same but vice versa with Debian. I love Alpine but I never touch it unless I need a container. I could continue forever. I’m still distrohopping, exploring, with the only “but” that I’m not changing my daily main platform.

First of all, it wasn’t rejected. Several noticeable distros included in to their repos or began testing. And the reason Void Linux yet hasn’t, is that the team isn’t sure about Xlibre’s longevity. I see no reason in cancelling XLibre due to developer’s political views. It’s free and open source, that’s it. Enrico Weigelt gets nothing for working on it. Furthermore, it is good that he’s making XLibre. He’s doing something safe and useful. He could’ve become a political bloger or activist and influence minds instead of coding. Now ask yourself, if this would be better than maintaining an obscure fork of a deprecated piece of software, which is hardly going to ever be adopted in security-sensitive environments (because they are on distros with Wayland already).

This can’t be legally done with a GNU project, since this is a direct derivation. I also don’t know if bun is ok now and if it used to be before.

I’m not trying to bait. I’ve been playing with Void for a while, but didn’t get what makes it special. I guess I’m missing something about it.

Rust-rewriting is a kind of madness. I like Rust, it’s an amazing language. But why rewrite programs that existed for decades and have proven their stability and safety? Rewriting them to Rust won’t make them safer, it will just introduce the kind of issues original versions have got fixed long ago. The MIT license also is a concern. I understand that many projects use it, and we can’t just reject them because of the license. But here we don’t see an innovation under MIT license - we see a copy of existing GNU tools, with hilarious issues and a corporation-friendly license. The fact uutils are being shipped despite being so raw shows that this is not about better software. The whole project is about abolishing GPL. And Rust is just an excuse. And the quality level of uutils being already shipped tells they either make free alpha testers for the corpos of the users, or there were no competent programmers to take part in the development. C will remain the core of the modern digital world for many years. It is impossible to rewrite everything to Rust in a couple of years. It needs a careful professional approach if we really want this to make software better. But in this case, no one does.

I want to switch to another DE on Fedora, from KDE to COSMIC, is it possible to switch in some simple way, kind of with rpm-ostree or something? I’ve searched the web but only found info on doing this with Atomic desktops, but I’m not using one and not planning to yet

I use Fedora and KDE really sucks here. It is bearable only with minimal options and animations enabled. Only thing keeping me from ditching is that I’ll have a long time picking something else that satisfies me, because I want a fancy desktop, but not a sluggish one. Have you seen a DE that features a couple of nice animations and effects and can mimic MacOS, but is lighter than KDE?

Linux Mint is generally less bloated than Ubuntu. For instance, is comes without snap (at least it used to. I’m not aware if things changed). If you want to discard Ubuntu totally, there is Mint Debian Edition. That’s it. You don’t want the struggle with getting used to fundamentally different distros like OpenSUSE or Fedora. Trust me.

I’ve installed Void Linux base image and my backspace key is broken when I am root, it types ‘^H’ instead of erasing. Function keys also type something weird, but at least the brighness-related ones do work. This only applies to the root shell, it all works perfectly when I login as a normal user. Probably a bashrc issue?

Oh, by the way I’ve heard of CachyOS, it is Arch based to I’ll have some of the advantages of Arch, and it is said to be optimized well. Have you ever heard of how Cachy performs?

A mouse is still much better than a touchpad. It was the real pain when I had no working mice at home. I believe people are productive because they feel comfy with that, but some prefer strict minimalism. I’m somewhere in between I guess. The mainstream OSs are trying to make the user type as little as possible. Just drag, click, and voila. But when it comes to Linux, if you take the advantage of precise control of your system within the terminal, you have to switch between the keyboard and the mouse all the time if you use a traditional desktop environment, so the advantage of drag-and-click simplicity vanishes.

I’ve applied a MacOS theme (the one from zayronxio) and that’s probably all. I don’t know whether it uses the compositor or not, it is mostly just the dock and a couple of liquid glass widgets which seem to be snappy. I believe, there’s no more animations than it was by default.

The young fellows love this eye candy, and so I do. You’re right, I need to give a tiling WM a try. I have already thought about how inconvenient constant switching between the keyboard and the mouse is, and how unergonomic touchpads are.

This is a purely technical association. And in case with Atomic Desktops, it is just an option at last. Yeah I probably would be able running NixOS, but I think it will take a lot of time to compile big packages in Gentoo. And if I don’t compile the largest parts of the system by myself with appropriate flags for efficiency, Gentoo doesn’t make that much sense compared to Arch or Artix. I have 5.7GB of RAM (the rest is reserved by system and GPU), and I’ve seen a guy with 128GB RAM on youtube, who still used a lot of binaries because of long compilation and the inefficiency (hah) of portage. He has been running Gentoo for more than a year. I wish I knew C so I could rewrite portage to C.

Why would a thing like Waterfox preload on boot? The boot by the way is also pretty slow, systemd loading 100500 services on start I guess. But now this is an idea - enabling browser loading in background at boot

I have an SSD. And it used to be snappy on Windows 10. The browser I use is not that bloated, again, it used to open instantly on Windows.

Some DEs are focused on resource efficiency, but don’t look fancy. Others are fancy, but require a fairly modern setup. I have KDE (Fedora) installed on my laptop, I love its look and options. But it is not always snappy, some little freezes occur as well, even in basic situations (opening Firefox and v2rayN simultaneously was one of the cases). The most problematic thing is almost every app taking around 2-3 secs to open its window. Many people would just tell me to install Xfce, but I still want a fancy desktop, I believe it is something I can afford on my setup. First I thought of GNOME, but it is controversial: some sources report GNOME as well optimized even for low-end machines, other claim it is much heavier than KDE. What it your experience with desktop environments and their performance? Perhaps you have compared various DEs within the same distro and setup? How performant GNOME actually is compared to KDE? What are the balanced options to explore?

Have you literally purged it out of the system? I’ve just disabled it from starting. Though, I may have broken Kontact or something. Never opened these.

Atomic desktops enforce immutability, the core system is literally a ROM almost like stock Android. It’s not always bad, I can easily imagine cases when it is perfect, but it’s not what I’m currently seeking from Linux. As far as I could figure out, secureblue imposes slightly less restrictions. Yeah well I knew about Arch circlejerk, but these KDE guys are something. I would probably get same reaction asking an Arch community about how to purge pacman. NixOS is worth testing indeed. However, AFAIK it is not lightweight enough for my setup. Pretty same as Gentoo, I guess. It is kind of ironical that the most controllable and efficiency-oriented distros aren’t actually good for mediocre setups (but well, I believe nothing stops from building a system on Gentoo with a powerful setup but with flags targeting a low-end device and then flashing the result to the latter). Unfortunately I have no experience with programming, so my learning curve will be fairly steep. But once I’ll just have the required skill level even for managing NixOS. And probably I will even learn programming, who knows.
