These literal thousands of recorded shows digitized from someone's tape recording collection are incredible https://archive.org/details/aadamjacobs?tab=collection

currently listening to the 1989(!!!) Nirvana shows but there's decades of content from hundreds of bands

I think we are supposed to be post-FRBR by now, as in critical of it, but it solves a real problem & I see why public libraries trend towards Bibliocommons. It segments requests for different Manifestations/mediums (e.g. audiobook, print) but not as granular as edition. You essentially cannot request a specific edition within a medium. Fine for most use cases, but obviously a marginal limitation. Substantially different editions (e.g. different translators of same Work) need separate records.

Bibliocommons kind of solved FRBRization and, perhaps because it's mainly used in public libraries, I don't really see anyone talk about it. I use a few different Bibliocommons instances of local public library systems & they combine records according to some more-intuitive idea of Work which combines things like audiobook, ebook, print, large print but does separate records for translations. It makes search results so much more legible than almost any academic library search I've seen.

@rowmyboat have you heard much about Aspen at all? We are a Koha library and it seems to be gaining some traction. I think it's somehow related to VuFind.

@hugh this is my feeling as well and it feels good to be validated! Agree that it is particularly hard to distinguish the corporate from the transformative at the present moment. Fwiw I really enjoy your takes and your Gulf of America post was super influential for me.

@fskornia that is close to my thinking & perhaps why it doesn't feel like there are truly exciting developments. It is hard to distinguish them from AI hype/extraction. I mention semantic search because it's intriguing to finally be able to query with natural language & not need to enumerate synonyms or know domain-specific terms; the information retreival holy grail. It's its own technology, using some of the same theory as LLMs, but without sharing the ideological commitments of AI companies.

Idle curiosity, if you were going to talk about one library technology development you're really excited about right now, what would it be?

The ADA Title II deadline might be my answer. Yes, I know it's been postponed. Luckily, they waited so long to announce the delay that most institutions have already done the good work.

Semantic / vector search?

Bibframe?!?!?

I feel like there has always been something exciting on deck but lately I am less sure what it is.

@platypus@glammr.us this is our schema with my kind of passive aggressive annotations where we're diverging from standard (much of which is due to system constraints) https://cca.github.io/vault_schema/

@platypus@glammr.us our repository uses a decently modified MODS. The app could use any XML schema but my boss, originally an archivist, chose MODS. I think she liked how detailed it could be.

Here is the Zoom recording of "Critical Cataloging & Librarianship Today: Ethics, Power, and Possibility" which I'd mentioned earlier this week: https://fresnostate.zoom.us/rec/share/xuAG_RRfjrE8ff_bVTdUGQGdLZ5ETmrDaLguxW1e6Fo9hF0w6pyEXAOFRvCtXUtY.nGsYx0AHpaCiL3Ju?pwd=DPLzEoY5SycFgnMGxQAAIAAAANkZ2iURktS8F2jxw7_PPE8cA5PbTXgDa1kdfog_y3TwZx5wurf4vR9lvZ3RcfxXujAwMDAwNA I cannot stress enough how excellent this webinar was, on the order of "it's amazing that this is free." Thanks to everyone who made it happen and who keeps doing the good work.

An excellent webinar on critical cataloging today as part of Fresno State's Womack Lecture Series. Every part I caught was amazing, but Emily Drabinski led with this slide which I just could not love more.

There are free IRS-certified tax preparation services for folks below a certain income level all over and I wish more people knew https://freetaxassistance.for.irs.gov/s/sitelocator The income limits vary by site but it doesn't hurt to check. Most students who are not working full time qualify, for instance. There's many multilingual sites. This is also a great program to volunteer for if you are at all inclined. You make a direct positive economic impact on your community.
