It’s worth a read, but if you don’t have time

What makes this revival uncomfortable is its timing. Phyllis could not respond. Her family, largely gone. There was no one left to correct the record or explain the circumstances. The image became a blank screen onto which modern viewers projected assumptions about drug use, morality, and personal failure.

Yet when her life is examined even briefly, those assumptions collapse. There is no evidence that she was a habitual drug user. No record of repeated arrests. No trail of chaos or criminality. Instead, there is a woman born into economic uncertainty, injured young, living through wartime upheaval, briefly targeted by an unjust legal system, and then settling into a quiet, unremarkable life.

The insult survives because it is easy. The truth requires effort.

The Reddit comment that circulates alongside Phyllis’s image captures something essential about her case. In 1944, freedom was conditional. It depended on fitting into social expectations, on being legible to authority, on not attracting the wrong kind of attention.

The same laws that ensnared Phyllis were used disproportionately against the poor, women, and people of colour. Their eventual repeal is often celebrated as progress, but repeal does not undo the damage done to those who lived under them.

Phyllis Stalnaker did not become a symbol in her lifetime. She did not campaign, protest, or write memoirs. Her story matters precisely because it is small. It reminds us how many lives were quietly constrained by laws that have since been forgotten, and how easily a single photograph can erase complexity.

Her revival online offers a choice. She can remain a joke, or she can be recognised as what she was: a woman shaped by her time, subjected to its injustices, and deserving of more than a label.

Oh good point 🤦 So maybe instead, we can clear all local + remote branches and tags, create a blank branch, delete main, rename the blank branch to main, then delete .git Although the OP says that we can merge anything, and we might not have access to mess with branches

From the Department of Bizarre Anomalies: Microsoft has suppressed an unexplained anomaly on its network that was routing traffic destined to example.com—a domain reserved for testing purposes—to a maker of electronics cables located in Japan. Under the RFC2606—an official standard maintained by the Internet Engineering Task Force—example.com isn’t obtainable by any party. Instead it resolves to IP addresses assigned to Internet Assiged Names Authority. The designation is intended to prevent third parties from being bombarded with traffic when developers, penetration testers, and others need a domain for testing or discussing technical issues. Instead of naming an Internet-routable domain, they are to choose example.com or two others, example.net and example.org. Output from the terminal command cURL shows that devices inside Azure and other Microsoft networks have been routing some traffic to subdomains of sei.co.jp, a domain belonging to Sumitomo Electric. I’m not sure why this comment is downvoted, it’s not incorrect and also acknowledges that generative AI is a bad source. Nearly every type of source, no matter how good it is, has an official way to cite it. There are even guidelines on citing in person conversations, social media posts, tiktoks, etc. People are allowed to cite it, but that doesn’t mean they should be. Especially in an academic setting lol. imo another big concern is that half the search results are now LLM slop. Someone might be trying to avoid generative AI and still end up citing a slop article that they didn’t realize was AI. How French spies, police and military personnel are betrayed by advertising data | Le Monde

Investigation | Using easily accessible advertising data, Le Monde was able to pinpoint the identities, home addresses and daily routines of several dozen people working for sensitive official entities. The identities of French spies are among the Republic’s most closely-guarded secrets. Revealing them is even a criminal offense. Yet, with just a little technical know-how, one can track down the home addresses of certain agents, and thereby discover their identities, daily routines and even those of their loved ones, all of which represent risks to their safety and that of their families and their agencies. The blame lies with the advertising industry, an insatiable and unregulated sector with no regard for transparency, which extracts billions of personal data points from people’s smartphones every day. This data, which can be used to track people’s movements particularly precisely, down to a few meters, is then resold. Evading such tracking, except for users with flawless digital hygiene, is nearly impossible. Staff members working for all of France’s most sensitive institutions are affected: intelligence officers, personnel responsible for protecting the country’s top officials, high-ranking police officers, members of the elite National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) unit, military personnel stationed at critical nuclear weapons bases, defense company executives, prison staff, and even nuclear power plant staff.
