@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk Not a lot of detail in the press release, but this feels like it’s targeted at the government/defense sector for applications where you have a shared conference room with built in AV equipment, and you want to support multiple security levels / SAPs / codewords.

@GroupNebula563@mastodon.social It depends on what you’re trying to optimize for and your specific application.
You asked for the most performant. For me, that would be the Energizer Ultimate Lithiums (L91). They can provide significantly more current, and maintain that over their lifetime vs. alkaline chemistry. This can be important in a lot of applications. They also have a 25 year shelf life. This is what I use in anything that I have that I need to grab and have work (e.g. a flashlight in the glove compartment or an emergency radio)
However, for most day to day usage, I’ve switched over to the Eneloops (or the Ikea branded version). For me, they work just as well in most applications, with the advantage of costing less in the long run, and I feel better about not having to throw them away.
Between those two, I’ve gone almost completely away from alkaline batteries, ESPECIALLY cheap alkalines. I’ve had way more $$ stuff destroyed from leaking batteries than I’ve ever saved buying cheap (or even name-brand) alkalines. And neither the Lithiums nor the Eneloops leak, even if you neglect them. If your doing a $2 disposable widget then sure, use a cheap alkaline, but even in a $20 remote control, how much can you save over it’s lifetime on cheap batteries?
And Yes, I know way too much about batteries.

@Wrewdison@masto.hackers.town One of the things that I’d like to see in this kind of system is a solid ability to control the precision at which you share location. To me, any system you’re going to advertize as being private or secure needs a fairly robust way to do this.
I’ve been looking at https://h3geo.org as an approach. It’s a hex grid that supports 15 resolutions from ~1,200km accuracy to ~0.5m in a 64 bit binary representation.
The library is in C, but I haven’t looked at how suitable it is to run on an embedded device.
I’m currently in the middle of an international move, and most of my hardware is on a ship somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic, but once I get settled I’d be interested in giving it a try

@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk This feels like similar themes to the Ken Thompson “Trusting Trust” lecture, but on the network and services side.
Its a big internet, and as an individual (or even a large corporation) you only have a very limited reach. Ultimately you have to trust someone, so it really comes down to who do you trust, and who do they trust?
Your self-hosted e-mail system doesn’t do you much good if your ISP goes away, and who are they trusting? Huawei? Cisco? What about the next hop? And the question is essntially fractal; The problem looks very similar at every scale from individual to company to country to all of europe.
Made the decision in November of 2024 to get out of the defense industry (where I’ve worked for 29 years), and get out of the US.
It’s been a long process, but right now, finally, I’m sitting in the airport bar with my kid waiting for a flight to London and a new start.
There have been a lot of times over the past 15 months that I’ve wondered if I’m making the right choice, and EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME something has happened to convince me that I’m doing the best thing for myself and my family. And waking up to the shit this morning is just the ultimate exclamation mark on the whole thing.
@Wrewdison@masto.hackers.town For a media server, I’m running UGreen NAS hardware with TrueNAS and Jellyfin. For an audio-only client I’m running a raspberry pi with Volumio, but can also playback via the Jellyfin app on Apple TV or web browser on a desktop.
