I think asking for disc-based games to remain creates a false dichotomy between the past and the future corporations want:
-
Disc-based media is way past its prime. Many large games are over 100GB, which would require multiple quad layer Blu-ray discs. The read speed of optical is so slow installing those games to your NVMe drive (whose bandwidth is orders of magnitude faster) would be agonising.
-
Disc-based media is bad for the environment. They are compound materials which are very hard to recycle, they start to rot within decades or even less depending on how hot and humid your climate is.
-
Single player games get patched and updated so much that what's on the disc isn't really the game anyway, and you can't just ask developers to stop doing that anymore. Many popular single player games nowadays are an ongoing conversation between users and developers (eg Early Access).
I think we need more digital rights and governments need to care about digital media and culture.

Hey, I just left an abusive home situation. I've got the right help, I'm talking to the right people and I've applied for government assistance. I'm set to start getting benefits at the end of the month, but I had move all my stuff last week in an emergency move which put me back further than expected, and I won't have what I need to make it until my first payment.
I need around £150 to bridge the gap for the next 2 weeks. Any help is greatly appreciated:

Thank you very much to everyone who has helped so far, boosts welcome 💜

There was a writer in certain circles who I respected and his writings meant something to me. I even spoke to him on occasion. His website had existed since about 2000, the last time I saw it was in ~2016. Recently, I learned that his website stopped in 2018.
I wonder what happened. :(

Found a really nice place to work at the other week. Dim lighting, chill atmosphere, great music, cheap and tasty filter coffee 😊☕

2c about Discord:
1. Cautiousness over anxiety. Gloss over alternatives, but don't be ready to immediately pack your bags. There's a good argument to be made for expressing your dissatisfaction, raising a stink on impactful channels (cancelling Nitro subs, Californians raising the privacy issue to their jurisdiction) than it is to no longer be a problem for Discord by quitting.
2. Alternatives are mixed at best. Discord's entry level friendliness is fuelled by an unsustainable business and ownership model. When you get into things that make more business sense, you are either paying, or you or someone in your friend group is going to become a sysadmin.

Last week, I left The Queery (a non-profit queer cafe, book store and event space in Brighton) with other experienced members because of a deeply ingrained poor working culture.

My lamp broke recently (and the HomeKit bulb with it 😢) so I cobbled together the cheapest possible replacement for it that attaches to my pegboard with improvised IKEA items:
- 1/3rd of the components of an IKEA STRANDAD floor lamp (bought pre-owned for maximum cheapness)
- A new IKEA KAJPLATS Matter over Thread RGB bulb
- A diffuser made from sketchbook pages (not great, I want to try this again in the future)
- A SKADIS paper clip (that I already owned) to hold the lantern from the bottom, and velcro cable tidies to strap it into the pegboard.
The internal bulb cage for the STRANDAD was turned upside down so it's pointing downwards to make more light face my desk, turning it into an adorable little street lamp of sorts.
Altogether, it works pretty well! The new IKEA smart bulbs are a lot better than Nanoleaf Essentials for half the price. They don't run hot, they're much lighter and they update over your home hub instead of Another Fucking App.

I had some very unpleasant experiences trying to do community work alongside self-identified 'radicals' recently.
I think people who imagine themselves in eternal struggle and ostracism make for unreliable working partners who don't have the most realistic priorities.

It's been a while since I showed finished work on social media so I've got a backlog. Here's an illustration I finished for @M0YNG@mastodon.radio of his server mascot 😱

The slightly amusing and sad feeling of remembering that the last time I saw one of my American cousins (and the last time I will ever see her face), it was some kind of NRA portrait photo where she was holding a gun with the US flag behind her.
