I do like videogames, including ones with NPCs, but the difference there is that an NPC isn’t pretending to be a person, it’s pretending to be a character in a fiction that was definitively written by a person. And even so, I very much don’t like hyper-realism in games, much prefer stylized and/or cartoony. And yeah the fake person at a drive thru thing started up where I am in California sometime last year (or at least that I first noticed). The irritatingly realistic voice is bad enough, but it’s really the obsequious responses that bug me there. A lot of, “great choice! The orange chicken is really tasty”, like bitch you literally don’t have a mouth, please stop.

Why do people like machines that pretend to be human?

I have a lot of issues with AI in general, but frankly the biggest, most immediate one is that I reeeally hate when tech pretends to be human. Like search engines giving me a seventh grader’s essay before the actual one-word answer I was looking for. Or the uncanny valley voice at the drive-thru speaker saying “great choice!” to everything I order. Or the AI on shopping websites saying “I’d recommend this model…” Etc etc. There’s just something so strange and uncomfortable to me about a thing that we all know is not a person pretending to be one; feels like someone telling a lie directly to my face, and I know they’re lying, and they know they’re lying, but I’m supposed to… appreciate it? For some reason? But a lot of people I know actually prefer it. They’ll ask ChatGPT something—even something that has a simple, definitive answer that doesn’t really need further explanation—rather than just looking it up on a search engine. I’m just curious what the difference in psychology is between us. And I’m wondering if maybe it’s actually just a me problem; I mean, I hated Jeeves too, and he seemed pretty well-liked back in the day.

Still waiting on the tragic romance version of Mulan, where they don't get together at the end because falling in love with boy-Mulan helped Shang finally come to terms with being gay. I'd also take the version where he ends up with Mulan's horny grandma instead. Either or.

I think what Jeff is pointing out is that it isn’t uncommon for someone to be misinterpreted as a misogynist and, when called out, decide to lean into the misogyny rather than away, even if it wasn’t their original intention. In this instance, it’s a miscommunication that the OP handled in a way that made me laugh out loud, but I think Jeff is right, that there are also people who, in the same situation would have responded something to the effect of “I was talking about her vision. Maybe if you women weren’t all so [insert twitter-typical misogyny here]”, etc etc. Obviously that isn’t what happened here, but it has been known to.

Not disagreeing at all, but I think it’s important to note how effective wage slavery is in keeping people too exhausted to stay informed. I’m in California, where a studio apartment goes for about $1k/mo, landlords generally require you to earn 3x rent after taxes to qualify, and minimum wage is $17/hr. So, working 60 hours a week at minimum wage, you might just barely qualify, and that’s without even taking into account all other living expenses. I agree that ignorance can be a byproduct of privilege, but it can also be a byproduct of poverty.

Lmao, but I've found it's less about being cool and more about being firm. I've got three friends that I told very plainly "I will no longer be reachable via SMS, please use Signal". Bear in mind that 1) these are people who love me a lot, more like family than friends, and 2) I didn't try to shame them or demand they stop using SMS entirely. I just said "this is how you reach me now". All three installed Signal, and one of them now uses it as their primary method of text communication like I do. Not saying it's easy necessarily, and I doubt this method would work for acquaintances rather than family or close friends. But every little helps, and it's a place to start.

It’s not a “Very Online” take, it’s a “paying any modicum of attention” take. Willful ignorance is not a valid excuse for anything, and if your boss truly thinks of Elon Musk (the richest man in the world who has bought elections and media platforms and every American’s social security number) the same way that you think of some random hockey player, then your boss is being willfully ignorant. It’s giving “i’M nOt pOLiTiCaL”, which we all know is just cowardese for “conservative”.
