i have an stable session on top of the epolling i implemented into vxwm, my fork of suckless dwm. this is great! it means that my fork is capable of high concurrency window manager sessions with like... lots of stuff happening. this is crucial for input events as well, since it would allow maximum responsiveness for frequent macro usage.... sounds like overkill but the implementation is very small. so i think i'm doing it right regarding the parameters for coding that suckless has outlined.

the minimal, modal, keyboard-first desktop environment project, .nhk -- which is the first of its kind -- is almost complete and almost entirely bugless. the version i am working on is not on github just yet, but the official repository will be hosted on codeberg anyway.

* minimal changes to dwm.c allow for the implementation of a modal keybinding system via sxhkd which controls the window manager in a similar nature to the vim text editor. this means you can almost think of the desktop environment like a text editor itself. there is also an "insert" mode, for sending key events directly to an application. other modes exist and are in development, such as audio or video, but they are considered to be extraneous and therefore not prioritized at the moment. what's prioritized is the mode transitions feeling instantaneous and whether the mental model stays coherent across different applications.

* dmenu is used extensively for replacing both certain terminal and gui-based workflows in place of direct interaction with the shell. for example, imagine using dmenu to interact with your package manager, music player, email client(s) (hopefully) or password manager. these menus are accessible via some of the carefully designed macros i've hinted at above.

* speaking of hinting, there is a dedicated effort on my part to implement hinting of various elements within a GUI application. you can press the F key and use the keyboard thereafter to select and interact with various elements inside of any application. for a demonstration of this in a controlled environment, install the Vimium C extension in your browser. bare in mind though that the implementation won't yet mirror vimium until later due to differences (DOM trees vs AT-SPI accessbility APIs) in how those elements are structurally "highlighted" for selection.

* the entire desktop environment contains itself within one subfolder inside of your home directory. this is regarded as a controversial decision due to XDG-related conventions, but makes the process of configuration, management, development, auditing, and removal of its entirety far simpler, bolstering its stance on minimalism by introducing a level of locality that other denvs ignore.

* a small list of essential programs are provided and installable, extending dwm from a mere window manager into the category of a desktop environment without breaching either the suckless philosophy or unix philosophy which both inspired nhk's creation. most of these programs are TUIs, meaning the footprint stays pretty small in terms of both disk and ram usage.

* careful attention to outlying details allows the aforementioned keybindings to operate the window manager as more of a "desktop editor", where behavior mirrors vim so tightly that it can almost blend any workflow together into a universal process.

* several patches thereafter make configuration of the dwm program capable of fulfilling many needs all at once. most of the popular patches are pre-included, but not all of them are "enabled" by default. you basically have an ultra-dwm that doesnt feel like one, i guess.
