"I see fences where there was no fence before"

Anarcho-Daoist, solar-punk. To Chaos.

He/him

Banner: excerpt from "The Goose and the Common", a poem noting that people who steal others' livelihoods are left alone, but someone who steals to live is punished.

Profile pic: King Mob from Grant Morrison's "The Invisibles", glass raised, toasting "To Chaos."

ADHD, Long-Covid and Osteo-arthritis (possibly Covid-induced) sufferer. Dealing as best I can with extreme pain and brain-fog.

@rechelon@mastodon.social I suspect I can be guilty of this in my "sloppier" moments. Tentatively, I wonder if it's because capitalism is something that feels "easier" to attack, something a bit more solid, and something that (at least on the face of it), we deal with every day, whereas statism *feels* a little more nebulous? It's not *quite* that, and it's a poor excuse; I also suspect that such an excuse probably exposes me as being hugely privileged because I don't *feel* like I'm dealing with the state every day? Not sure I've made total sense, but I wonder if that's part of it.

@ohmrun@indieweb.social And, I can't see it now, but I scrolled past a post an hour or so back which noted that because they've raised the terror threat level, that gives them the perfect excuse to cancel marches for six months (apparently the current threat level is "high risk in the next six months", which I hadn't really twigged) ( @Geri@mastodon.online might have been one of yours?)

@ohmrun@indieweb.social Yep. I just looked it up, there were 205 murders in England & Wales last year, and 50,000ish assaults over all (I think? I've an idea I'm reading that number wrong) Wonder how many of the victims were Muslim? I'm guessing, like, a a good few, but I've very little idea, and I don't think I could find out by searching BBC News, you know? So, why this one?

"Protests may need to be stopped in some cases, PM suggests"

This is about Pro-Palestine protests in the aftermath of the stabbing of 2 Jewish men a few days ago.

Note: it's not being widely publicised, but the attacker stabbed a 3rd man - a Muslim - as well, earlier in the day.

Clearly I'm not the first person to make this observation, but there's a very odd thing about being a person in the their late 40s, where I grew up being the "kid who programmed the VCR"

My elders don't know how to use Excel (etc). Neither do my younger colleagues, which leaves me in the odd position of "how the bloody hell did you do that?" after I've, like, done a vlookup.

Bonus is that I can do 2 minutes of work, then go and spend 50 minutes in the kitchen (I'm WFH), occasionally wiggle my mouse (oor-er!) just in case, and they'll assume that what I've just sent them was an hour of solid hardcore work.

I am not in a mind, right now, to correct them.

@humanhorseshoes@mastodon.world produced by an Australian company; unclear if it's produced *for* Australia, as such, but I've assumed so? I'm in the UK, if that makes a difference

Hey, Australian/New Zealander friends? How much is an Australian gallon in millilitres? I'm getting 4,546 from the internet - is that correct? I've literally never thought in "gallons" in my life, so I've got no immediate "yeah, that sounds about right", and it seems like different countries use different measurements?? Context: I need to dissolve 1 tsp of powdered medicine/supplement in 2 gallons of water for my budgies. The medicine/supplement (Ronivet) is from an Australian company, per the label. Given how little 1 tsp is vs 2 gallons, I *really, really* don't want to mess up the proportions; also, I don't have anything which can hold 4 1/2 litres of water, so I'm going to have work out how much to put into 1 litre or maybe 1.1 litres. I have measuring spoons which go down to 1/4 tsp, which I *think* is correct for 1.1 litre. @SeaFury@aus.social @3TomatoesShort@disabled.social @AnnonBudgie@theblower.au (apologies for maybe spamming, but you folks sprung to mind in my "help!" brain)

My partner is away for a week on a very well-deserved break with a friend.

As always, it makes me realise just how much they do, and that I possibly take for granted.

I *am* on top of keeping the kitchen clean, doing the laundry and so on and so forth, but it's been very hard work for me.

They do a lot of this when I've gone to bed (we have hugely different sleeping schedules), so a lot of the time, I just come down at 6am and the kitchen has magically cleaned itself, the dishwasher is magically clean and just needs emptying, and my coffee is magically ground and cold-brewed. The laundry often hangs itself by magic as well.

We split the chores in something that feels equitable due to varying skillsets/responsibilities etc, but honestly - it can never hurt to notice and say thank you for the things that the other one does.

Serious ask:

I need a crash-course in AI.

Context: my line manager has been asked to evaluate the use of AI at work. He's come to me to ask if I want to help, as he knows I hate it (and he does too), but I'm...vaguely aware...that not all things that are called "AI" are equal.

(like, the "AI" of NPCs in a game is not the same as the "AI" used to create the type of image we generally call "slop", right?)

We want to make sure we're armed with decent knowledge, because we don't want people to say "Oh, ignore them, they're just haters" if we're talking about something that maybe isn't the "bad" kind of AI (if such a thing exists - I don't know enough to be confident right now)

At the moment, *to the best of my currently limited knowledge*, our AI usage is pretty much limited to people using Gemini to create emails and transcripts of meetings.

(I hope that makes sense)
