@Cheatha@chaos.social Ach cool, ich muss mich echt mal umgucken, was es schon alles gibt. Ich hab tatsächlich eine Sizzix Big Shot aus dem Bastelbedarf zuhause, für die es kaufbar auch Prägeschablonen gibt. Vermutlich werde ich erstmal damit anfangen die nachzuahmen und mit Braille zu testen. Und ich bin letztens auch über eine Open Source Druckerpresse gestolpert, die auch mit solchen Schablonen funktionieren müsste.

I currently have very little experience with 3D printing, but fortunately that is something that can be learned. Maybe someone here already knows about similar projects? As I was asked about a hashtag, I will be using #BrailleChaosSticker for future experiments. If others here decide to try something as well, I would be very happy to hear about it too.

A completely different approach was suggested by @salticidea@chaos.social who tested embossing a short Braille text by hand using a Braille slate on a leftover piece of vinyl adhesive film. Building on this, I would like to explore whether it might be possible to create an embossing stencil using 3D printing and then emboss the Braille dots with a press. This would allow Braille added manually afterwards on a sufficiently large sticker to be printed on vinyl or PVC film.

That said, this does not mean that I will stop experimenting. As a designer, the topic genuinely interests me from a technical perspective, and I also found it extremely engaging to learn more about Braille in the process. On the one hand, I am considering looking for a reasonably priced printing company that would be willing to apply a double layer of varnish. I also plan to follow up on @Drayventhal@mastodon.social suggestion regarding sign-making companies and Mimaki printing systems.

The #39c3 is over, and I finally wanted to share an update on my #Braille #sticker experiment. A huge thank you goes to @svenja@mstdn.games and another person who kindly tested the sticker. Both were able to confirm my initial concern straight away: the Braille dots are not sufficiently tactile. For this reason, I only handed out the stickers to a small number of people as examples. This was to ensure that no one finds the sticker by chance and assumes that this approach is viable.

Zwar habe ich bisher kaum 3D-Druck-Kenntnisse, aber das lässt sich ja glücklicherweise ändern. Oder vielleicht kennt eine Person hier bereits Projekte in diesem Bereich? Da ich nach einem Hashtag gefragt wurde, werde ich für weitere Versuche #BrailleChaosSticker benutzen. Falls andere hier ebenfalls etwas ausprobieren, würde ich mich auch sehr freuen, davon zu hören.

Einen ganz anderen Ansatz hat mir @salticidea@chaos.social gezeigt: Dort wurde mit einer Braille-Schreibtafel auf einem Rest Vinyl-Klebefolie ein Testtext von Hand eingeprägt. Daran anknüpfend würde ich gern ausprobieren, ob es möglich ist, eine Prägeschablone per 3D-Druck herzustellen und die Braille-Punkte mithilfe einer Walze einzuprägen. Das hätte den Vorteil, dass man zunächst einen ausreichend großen Sticker auf Vinyl- oder PVC-Folie drucken lassen und anschließend selbst Braille prägen könnte.

Das heißt aber nicht, dass ich das Thema nicht weiterverfolgen werde. Als Designerin interessiert mich das auch technisch sehr, und ich fand es im Zuge dessen extrem spannend, mehr über Braille zu lernen. Einerseits habe ich noch die Idee, nach einer nicht zu teuren Druckerei zu suchen, die den Lack doppelt drucken kann. Außerdem möchte ich dem Hinweis von @Drayventhal@mastodon.social nachgehen und mich mit Werbetechnik-Unternehmen sowie Mimaki-Druckmaschinen beschäftigen.

Der #39c3 ist vorbei und ich wollte euch endlich ein Update zu meinem #Braille #Sticker Versuch geben. Ein riesiges Dankeschön geht an @svenja@mstdn.games und eine weitere Person, die den Sticker freundlicherweise getestet haben. Beide konnten meine Befürchtung direkt bestätigen: Die Braille-Punkte sind nicht ausreichend tastbar. Aus diesem Grund habe ich die Sticker nur an wenige Personen als Beispiel und mit einem entsprechenden Hinweis weitergegeben, damit niemand zufällig darauf stößt und es nachahmt.

We have a strong sticker culture on this conference. Leider hab ich keinen Zugang zu Druckmaschinen und wollte auch nach einer Lösung suchen, die günstig für alle machbar ist, aber trotzdem gut zu wissen. Ich hab auch gehört, dass manche doppelt Relieflack drucken, aber da müsste ich erstmal eine Druckerei finden, die das machen würde.

@NicApicella@chaos.social Da ich ja eine günstige für alle mach- und bezahlbare Lösung finden wollte, hab ich die nach Absage einer anderen Druckerei bei Wirmachendruck in Auftrag gegeben. Es sind die Etiketten mit Teillackierung. Ich hab für 100 Stück jetzt ca 40 Euro gezahlt, wobei die Maschineneinrichtung ca. 15 Euro gekostet hat, wesentlich mehr wären also preislich noch günstiger pro Sticker.

@jaseg@chaos.social Tatsächlich habe ich das am Ende einfach bei Wirmachendruck drucken lassen (Etiketten mit Teillackierung), da die andere angefragte Druckerei mir abgesagt hatte, wegen der geringen Menge. Die Lackierung wird für diese Druckerei mit angelegter Volltonfarbe auf 100% Magenta, die "Lack" benannt wird, angelegt und auf Überdrucken gestellt. Sollten die Tests ergeben, dass es so funktioniert, erstelle ich gerne nochmal eine Anleitung.

A border was added for orientation, though production limited it to a 2 mm margin. The slider icon is also printed with raised varnish. High black–white contrast and matte paper were chosen deliberately to improve tactile readability, although this makes the stickers less durable.

More facts: I used the Braille CC0 font (https://www.fontspace.com/braille-cc0-font-f96789) and followed the size recommendations from the German Wikipedia article; letter spacing was left at zero, assuming the font’s spacing is correct. For the translation (especially “39c3”) I used brailletranslator.org with Unified English Braille Grade 1, as this is an international event.

English version: Hi #39c3, I tried to find an affordable way to put Braille on #stickers and ended up using labels with raised varnish. The idea for Braille stickers originally came from @daswarkeinhuhn@netzkae.se and has stayed with me ever since. I am not yet sure whether the Braille is raised enough, so I am looking for testers at Congress to give feedback on readability and possible improvements.

Der Unterschied zu "German 1" war auf der Übersetzungsseite aber auch nur ein Zeichen. Außerdem dachte ich eine Umrandung ist sinnvoll, leider war die Produktionsbedingt nur mit 2mm Abstand zum Rand möglich. Und das Slider-Icon hat auch Relieflack bekommen. Der hohe Kontrast mit schwarz-weiß beim Druck ist auch absichtlich gewählt worden. Das Papier ist matt, damit die glatten Erhebungen des Relieflacks besser fühlbar sind, leider sind sie dadurch aber nicht so widerstandsfähig.

Vielleicht noch ein paar Fakten, ich habe diesen Font benutzt: https://www.fontspace.com/braille-cc0-font-f96789 und mich bei der Schriftgröße an die Angaben im deutschen Wikipedia-Artikel gehalten, die Laufweite habe ich bei 0 beibehalten in der Hoffnung, dass die Abstände im Font bereits richtig eingestellt sind. Als Übersetzung vor allem für das "39c3" habe ich https://www.brailletranslator.org/ benutzt mit der Einstellung "Unified Englisch Braille Code 1", da es ja eine recht internationale Veranstaltung ist.

Hey #39c3 , ich habe versucht eine günstige Möglichkeit zu finden Braille auf #Sticker zu bekommen und kam auf Etiketten mit Relieflack. Die Idee zu Braille auf Stickern kam übrigens von @daswarkeinhuhn@netzkae.se und hat mich nicht mehr losgelassen.
Allerdings bin ich mir unsicher, ob es erhaben genug ist und bin daher auf der Suche nach Tester*innen auf dem Congress, um Feedback zu bekommen, ob es ausreicht und was noch besser gemacht werden kann.

Hallo #Hamburg, ich bräuchte etwas #fedihelp für meinen Partner: Könnt ihr einen Mieterschutzverein in Hamburg persönlich empfehlen und wisst ihr, ob die auch helfen, wenn man bei einer Wohnbaugenossenschaft wohnt?

Es geht um extremen Lärm über ihm und er möchte gerne, dass der Zwischenraum zu der Wohnung darüber verfüllt wird zur Lärmdämpfung, was technisch möglich wäre in dem Altbau, die Genossenschaft weigert sich jedoch trotz Lärmprotokoll, etc..
