Hello, I moved to mastodon.art

#writerscoffeeclub 19/11/2024 Have still images ever inspired your writing? I’ve been inspired by several artists, from John Byrne to Paolo Serpieri. For Esther and Erie more precisely, Charles Dana Gibson has been the main inspiration. #writerscoffeeclub 18/11/2024 What have you written most different from your usual work? Esther and Erie: I don’t know exactly why but this story has caught me enough so I managed to make it real

#writerscoffeeclub 17/11/2024 Have you ever written anything where the POV shifts partway through to a new MC? Would you? The initial story consisted of three books: 1st one was told by Esther; 2nd one was told by Erié; 3rd one was told by Esther and Érié, each chapter alternately. I thought at the time that it was smart but it doesn’t really work once turned into a comic.

#writerscoffeeclub 16/11/2024 When did you reach the point when you thought: wow, I'm a writer? Are you still waiting? When I sold my first copy of the artbook, it was one year ago.

#writerscoffeeclub 15/11/2024 What do you owe the real people you base your characters on? Even if I use actors’ features for most of my characters, they are not real people: The public image they expose on which I base my characters are also characters on their own. [Edit: I forgot Dr Joyce, Freud of my universe. He’s supposed to look like him and to share interests, but with any change needed by the story. Also he died more than 70y ago, so I don’t owe anything to him/his heirs]

#writerscoffeeclub 14/11/2024 What's the most challenging thing about writing characters of a different sex/gender from your own? My characters are indeed quite stereotypical (the conservative lady, the helpful maid, the sociopath villains). And I don’t write a story set in our world today, so it’s not a problem if they don’t react as real people.

#writerscoffeeclub 13/11/2024 Is there a message that runs through all of your work? I remember hearing an interview of French singer Gerard Manset saying: “The message is that there’s no message„ [Musical illustration: the symphonic opera rock Orion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7gyTlZDgFs]

#writerscoffeeclub 12/11/2024 Do any of your characters have pets? Tell us about them. Oops 🙊 I zapped this question 🙃 Her leonine nature makes Erie pet like from time to time, as in the linked illustration, based on a Préraphaélite painting by Walter Crane, in which Erie replaces the cat. [Illustrations: my version of At Home by Walter Crane and the original painting]

#writerscoffeeclub 11/11/2024 How many times do you usually edit?

My typical process is:

  • Write a draft of the chapter
  • Turn it into a storyboard
  • Do all the pages (some authors are doing all lines then all inking then all the colors. I do a page entirely before starting next one
  • When all the pages are done, I put them in Affinity Publisher to add texts

It’s quite different than doing a novel, there’s not really an editing phase, but sometimes I change the dialogues when in Publisher.

#writerscoffeeclub 10/11/2024 Do you agree with Samuel Johnson, who said, "What is written without effort is generally read without pleasure"? It’s mixed: From time to time, I produce an artwork swiftly and easily and it is often the most appreciated. It seems that this easiness can be seen in one way or another. But this often happens after a period of difficulties to produce and doubt, which are also periods of artistic progression.

#writerscoffeeclub 08/11/2024 Do you ever use particular punctuation characters like [, ], {, }, ‹, ›, #, -, *? How do you use them? Not for now! Maybe later if I had to show some maths/physics when Jekyll or Moreau try to cure Esther ?
