I've decided to pull my mastodon instance out of moth balls. Still setting it up, but I will shortly be moving to exile.social.

oh dear god. here we go again...

social media remains the best way to know if someone you follow is having a manic episode.

Using a text client to consume the majority of my fediverse content finally cured me of the doom scroll that I'd been doing for a decade+, but that really picked up during pandemic/lockdown.

That being said, if you're posting images or video without a text descriptor, I'm not bothering to load them up to see what they were. If someone provides a description & it sounds interesting, then I'll click through about 50% of the time.

I don't have a disability that requires this, but it has helped tame my consumption. If you care about the few of us consuming things in this way and/or those w/disablities that rely on the descriptions, you may want to include one.

If you don't, no worries, but I'm not seeing what you're laying down.

@mykd I imagine out of the gate, there will be some issues, some revisions, people will coalesce, some will go their own way. I think the thing that probably makes it happen more/less successfully is it's something that everyone wants, and most admins want to have the feature for their users.

@mykd it's ultimately up to each individual site how they will/won't Federate. That's the blessing and the curse.

@mykd I've never seen it work, so the devil's in the details, but I was running an instance until recently, and that was in the change log/release notes. They just need enough servers to be at the current version to understand how to deal with the edits. The Federation concept makes this particular thing a little more tricky, since all the servers out in the world have to have a way to know about and propagate the edit.

@mykd I may be missing something again, but the current version of Mastodon DOES include an edit button. It was just added in the most recent release about a month or so back. They are waiting until enough of the instances out in the world update to the latest release to turn it on, but it's already been baked in.

@mykd sorry, I misinterpreted your "lets fix that" as a "hey this is broken, why don't the mastodon devs fix this?", not as "in my next step I'll show you how to persist this."

@mykd you can pin the column. Click the little settings icon at the top right, and then choose the pin option. Doing this from memory, but that should be pretty close.
