@gee un truc que j'adore c'est quand les jeux vidéo ont une fonction arachnophobie où les araignées sont remplacées par le mot "araignée" (ex. Lethal Company)

you know how in Mario 64, Mario will start doing a little "woaaaaa" when he falls from a long way? sometimes, you hit the ground and continue playing before he's done, overriding any other "wah"s. which leads me to believe Mario is being dramatic for fun

I only follow the European Commission for their rare incomprehensibly unhinged stuff https://ec.social-network.europa.eu/@EUCommission/117030824880557533

Attached: 1 image In 2014, in Europe, there was much ado about 666. That was the number of an EU law that required vacuum cleaners to use a maximum of 1,600 watts – and there was a lot of talk about the EU allegedly ‘’banning powerful vacuum cleaners!’’ What actually happened is that manufacturers had to get the same suction with less power. And they did. Because when aims are clear, engineers know what they’re doing.

in defense of swap on permanent storage swap is not meant for the purposes of being "backup RAM" when you run out of actual RAM! if you are frequently running out of RAM it's probably because you're using too much or you don't have enough. even the best SSDs are much too slow to be memory. swap today is meant to be for parking memory that's not being used. interactive programs like your browser and your window manager and stuff should not be swapping. about zswap (aka zram swap, using a compressed RAM-backed filesystem as swap): it's useful but does not replace swap because it has much more limited capacity and of course, it uses RAM itself. much better to have zram + lower priority swap in there in my opinion. i don't like that a lot of distributions completely forgo regular swap in favor of it. i wonder if this is because developers expect everybody to be in excess of RAM. about SSD wear: people are too concerned about this in general. i suspect this is some kind of remnant anxiety due to the first generations of SSDs being much worse at handling wear. there is nothing wrong with using SSDs for swap. about hibernation: it's useful! you should have a swap large enough to support it :) so, is swap of any use if it's not for avoiding out of memory conditions killing my processes, you ask? well it actually does that! only it's a passive process, not an emergency mode. if you're having memory pressure issues, it can be very useful (also look into tuning swappiness, your system OOM killer, and cgroup settings).

I'm happy about a little bit of networking problem-solving I did earlier: I wanted to access my newly-installed media server on my home server through the wider Internet but I don't wanna expose my home IP because (1) it's dynamic and I don't wanna deal with dynDNS especially through my ISP-provided router (2) opsec reasons. usually I would install services that I expose to the Internet to my dedicated server with a public and static set of IP addresses but here it was a no-go because I don't want to put my media library on there (storage is limited and prohibitively expensive). so I tell myself let's proxy HTTP traffic to my home server! but how do I do that? and then I remembered wireguard is perfect for that! as long as one of the two peers can reach the other, they can communicate so I don't need any complex IP setup on the home server! with my wireguard configs written and systemd services enabled (let's not forget the keepalive packets otherwise the servers lose each other, pains of being behind a home router), my HTTP server can proxy the home media server no problem! it works super well! no need for special routing rules as this is just for point-to-point communication. as a bonus, I get to do secure TLS termination and don't have to deploy certificates to the home server: it just talks HTTP and that's it. and I can add other services with the same setup super easily too. this is what a VPN is for folks: pretending you have a magic infinite secure LAN for easy plumbing of services :D
