Gorgeous example of Northern Sámi writing by Lars Jacobsen Hætta, 1863. The accented mark that eventually morphed into the caron was, from the start, something completely different. The second image shows Jens Andreas Friis’ spelling, which he developed in collaboration with – or informed by? (I haven’t yet gone in to the full story) – Hætta during Hætta’s imprisonment in Oslo for his role in the Kautokeino riots.

Important lesson for type and graphic designers from the liner notes of composer Ahmed Essyad: “[He] supported North African popular forms of expression and opposed its folklorizing through simplistic and ‘exotic’ representations (...) the real point is to open up an imaginary space where another modernity can exist outside the largely Eurocentric framework [...]”
Today is a great day to join a union. Might not be the most obvious thing for a solo designer, but it can be a first step away from the neo-liberal impulses that define contemporary graphic design – such as chasing autonomy and peer recognition, and conflating your personal worth with financial success.
