The kintsugi-ness of the cover, the disjointed quality of the text, and the fact that Stewart Brand is approximately a zillion years old all point to the probability that Brand gave a lot of collected and vaguely related essays and fragments written over several decades to his editor who endeavored mightily to put it all together into a coherent and saleable form before the author could no longer help market the thing.

Every non white, non cis, non male, non able bodied person has had the experience of sharing an idea but not being heard at all by the hegemon du jour, only to have the same idea applauded when someone in the "right" demographic says it. Totally infuriating. Such a common experience that it shows up as a trope in ads, tv, everywhere.
Still, if the idea is the important thing, we might swallow the outrage and let the clueless guy take the credit. Or even let them think it was their idea in the first place. Not because it's right, but because we need to get the shit done.
