https://www.bsi.bund.de/DE/Themen/Verbraucherinnen-und-Verbraucher/Informationen-und-Empfehlungen/Cyber-Sicherheitsempfehlungen/Accountschutz/Sichere-Passwoerter-erstellen/sichere-passwoerter-erstellen_node.html

@hrx@mastodon.online According to this (https://social.vivaldi.net/@TechieNotNetie/116402568097737684 and the setting's description) you should not touch that setting unless doing some debugging. Also it doesn't work; at least not for me or the normal UA string I get.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net I still would like to have an option to identify the browser as Vivaldi and not another Mozilla-yadda-yadda-Chrome-Safari.

@TechieNotNetie@social.vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net I understand that. And I understand the decision to change the default UA string so less techy people won't complain about the browser being broken when it is the faulty website. However, even then Opera was singled out and actively sabotaged by some websites/webservices delivering broken code to it. (So there was also the option to mask it as another browser.) But as you can see, there are still people believing (changing Sec-CH-UA to wave the Vivaldi flag) in an open web. I used to use a user agent switcher extension (doesn't work anymore) and had it set to "Vivaldi/x" without too much trouble. I know Twitter didn't like it, but mostly I didn't experience any issues. Having a temporary debugging option available but no way to set the user agent string to a clean Vivaldi is just weird. It doesn't have to be the default - just give Vivaldi enthuisasts the option, even if it might lead to some broken websites.

"One of the most controversial web browsers, as far as user-agent strings are concerned, is Opera. The default user-agent string for Opera is the most logical of all modern browsers, correctly identifying itself and its version."
This is the way!

@gothpanda@pandapla.net That is not correct. Opera back in the days didn't do it, more exotic browsers (Lynx) don't do it.
Yes, it started because sites did checks to serve different HTML code to different browsers (which is wrong by itself), messing with browsers that would have worked fine with the "Mozilla"-code. It is *not* expected. Like I said, any website that still does this kind of thing is pretty much outdated by decades and should be fixed.

Why isn't there a "clean" UA string for Vivaldi?
Instead of
"Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/146.0.0.0 Safari/537.36"
(even with the Sec-CH-UA browser identity HTTP header set to Vivaldi) do
"Vivaldi/7.9 (Chrome/146.0.0.0)"
maybe add the OS? At least as an option. I seriously doubt it but if there are any websites outside there that still require a "Mozilla/5.0" they should be updated and/or avoided. I get that the Chrome-part might be relevant (it shouldn't), everything else is just stupid and wrong.

@Vivaldi For a new computer running Windows basically everything I can and that I don't identify as a driver software or similar. For a new (Android) phone anything I don't recognize (and am able to uninstall) plus some of the (Google) apps I don't ever use.
