Color buddy is a research project (from me, Maureen Stone, and Jeffrey Heer) that explores the idea of property checking (or linting) in GUI tools. All of our checks are end user editable/tuneable. Generally we find that this kind of linting and GUIs smoosh well together!! (caveat emptor: its an academic research project, so there are likely bugs haha 😅)

I'm excited to announce the release of our tool Color Buddy! It’s a vis color palette designer built on good color science (incl. spaces like LAB/OKLCH) AND it has modern favs like direct manip & AI fiddles. Spicier: it checks your palette (for a11y/design/etc issues) as you go! (#ieeevis)

I have two #ieeevis things today:

- in the “morning” block I’m on a vis in practice panel discussing issues relating to research/practice barriers. (Can zines save us???? Maybe??)
- in the “afternoon” block we’re hosting a workshop on sustainability in vis (and sustainability for vis) called VISions. It includes a rad keynote from noted future/sustainability thinker/overall smart person Neha Kumar

@jazz that’s a really interesting comparison bc it has a really different approach to interdisciplinarity. Not having read the article yet, my impression is that complexity sci is more like a new thing made from old (eg take the problems from an old field like Econ and reinterpret them) whereas vis has more of a client-consultant relationship with other fields where we show and make something and dip (some exceptions obv, like perception) (cf the litany of vis4x sub areas)

sometimes i think we need some more "grand challenges" type north starring, other times i think we need to change the name of the field (so that we aren't as focused on pictures). a throughline from the VDS disco was that maybe we should go work with other people in their home venues also feels salient, but also raises a question: why is vis itself a field? if we're support should we not just go do support where it's needed?

In the first week of my phd i wound up trapped in a party conversation with a cs-theory person their big question about vis was "where does the field of vis want to be in 10 years". I kinda stumbled out a "its a human factors field, that's not how it works" answer (they weren't satisfied by this answer and eventually convinced themselves it was showing higher and higher numbers of dimensions graphically, which is dumb) but here i am 8 years later and i basically don't really know still

In the VDS panel today there was some reflection on if VDS is done (it's mission served etc etc)

This is really hitting a nerve for me because i've been wondering when vis will be done. When are our efforts going to be spent better elsewhere? How will we know? (#ieeevis)
