@Sustainable2050@mastodon.energy IIRC, at least one third of global shipping is for transporting fossil fuels.

@Sustainable2050@mastodon.energy Saw one of these LNG tankers today, passing by the German North Sea coast island that I'm spending my vacation on. Like almost all the big vessels, it spewed a long trail of yellowish smoke (thought sulphur is mostly banned from ship fuel nowadays? It looked sulphur). This corner of the North Sea is so packed with vessels waiting for entry to the German harbors that the complete horizon has a yellow-grey smoke layer before the actual 'sky' begins above that layer.

Moment.

@ORIOliver@newsie.social @hastingsmothman@mastodon.green @JohanEmpa@mastodon.green That's how I understand it. @JohanEmpa@mastodon.green might want to correct me if it's too wrong.

@hastingsmothman@mastodon.green @ORIOliver@newsie.social @JohanEmpa@mastodon.green I guess part of the worry about losing all connections comes from the name of the affected instance? "mastodon.cloud" sure sounds very generic and important. But it is just another village...

@hastingsmothman@mastodon.green @ORIOliver@newsie.social @JohanEmpa@mastodon.green Along those roads, toots travel, potentially through the whole network. If now the village 'mastodon.cloud' turns out to often be a source of travellers with bad intents, the majors of other villages can decide to forbid ALL such travellers from m.c. village entry to their own villages. (A difficult decision to make, because m.c. village likely also has good guys...)
But it breaks communication only to m.c. village residents, NOT to all the other villages.

@hastingsmothman@mastodon.green @ORIOliver@newsie.social @JohanEmpa@mastodon.green It did sound a little snappy
I am no expert myself, but hope the answer is correct enough to be useful. Mastodon is based on 'federation' of instances. Think of your instance as the village you live in, which is connected to neighbouring villages by roads, which again are connected to further villages etc. /1

@hastingsmothman@mastodon.green @ORIOliver@newsie.social @JohanEmpa@mastodon.green Since you are asking so nicely, I'll give my understanding:
Once the mastodon.cloud instance has been 'defederated' from our server, you will not be seeing any posts originating from users registered on mastodon.cloud, nor will they see yours. Reason for defederation is that the moderators on mastodon.cloud are not keeping it secure and spammer-free.

@ORIOliver@newsie.social @JohanEmpa@mastodon.green there is a long and quite informative discussion under the original toot.
