@patrick@retro.social i wasn't referring to Intel, I was referring to PC vendors. Intel knows software just enough to be dangerous, as you described. PC vendors not even. Anyway I think the main issue is: simply no consumer market. It's very much like DRM: the worst thing ever if you trust the interwebs. But in reality pretty much everyone uses DRM without the faintest idea of what it is.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange thanks to LLMs, everyone can now write their own Operating System and entire software stack! Each with a different set of bugs and vulnerabilities. Individually vulnerable but collectively strong thanks to their unique "DNA". Monoculture problem: solved! Software is becoming biological and darwinian; let the best software genes win. Condolences to mathematicians and other theorists 🙂

@simontatham most trackers have a "Wontfix" substate when closing. It shouldn't be a substate. The "Closed" state is ambiguous and should disappear, split in two: "Wontfix" and "Done". I've seen countless, time-consuming debates about this surprisingly simple yet enduring ambiguity. Time management is a little bit about what to do and a lot more about what NOT to do. The latter is the harder part yet most systems focus on the former.

@kees@hachyderm.io LLVM recently switched to Discourse, away from mailing lists. Some people are not happy. Fans of this or that tool and everyone else are all missing the most important point: where is the high-level, _design document_ for "get_maintainer.pl" ? It's a really hard/impossible problem, so there's no such document and no design. The choice of Perl is only the icing on the cake.
