@agnes@pdx.social I was typing a dessert recipe to share with you until I made an Internet search and realized that Jackfruit and Soursop are actually not the same thing. This is unrelated to your question, but have you ever tasted Soursop? Does it taste similar to Jackfruit? They look very similar on the inside and outside.

@CStamp@mastodon.social Thanks for sharing the article! I found the study really interesting, but it seems to have a couple of major flaws. For one, testing only three varieties makes it hard to draw a generalized conclusion for all types of rice. Also, the washing method they used isn't really representative of how people actually cook—nobody I know only washes their rice for 20 seconds! Well, I guess that was never the scope the authors were intending to tackle.

@SabiLewSounds@mastodon.social @CStamp@mastodon.social Oh cool! Do you know what rice is usually accompanied with? In Ecuador, we usually eat with a bean stew we call "Menestra" (yay double carbs) and some protein.

@CStamp@mastodon.social Rice is more of a regional thing for "costeños" in Ecuador and some parts of Brazil as far as I know. For example, people from the Andes absolutely love their potatoes.

@CStamp@mastodon.social I don't wash rice when it's store bought, but I do when I do when it comes by the pound to get rid of any impurities that are sometimes present like little pebbles. Random Story: I'm Ecuadorian and I've been asked if I have Asian family the few times I've been abroad, since people usually get surprised when they see me eating rice all every day. In the Coastal region of Ecuador rice is THE lunch and dinner staple on everybody's table, it's rare when we don't eat it at least once a day.

@scalzi As someone with a very tight budget, the price is very tempting since my current system is showing it's age (even more so in the current RAMpocalypse). However, the inability of installing Linux natively is a total deal breaker for me.

@MarkHoltom While this behavior is commendable when earnest, I don't feel we should paint Mané as an icon of virtue; he seems to have no moral qualms about participating in the Saudi Arabian sportswashing project or marrying a de facto child bride. This is to say nothing of the fact that, contrary to his claims, he has been documented maintaining a large luxury car collection.

@susankayequinn@wandering.shop I would say this describes most mainstream corporate media in the world. They love hammering the idea that incoming catastrophes; like the collapse of our ecosystems due to climate change, and the inability of our retirement social systems to cope with an aging population; can be solved with glacial-paced granular changes instead of the full on radical systemic reform the problems require.
