One similar thing that has bugged me for so long is for some reason honking or having a back up tone to indicate you can't see behind you while driving in reverse is only necessary in commercial applications like driving a box truck and even then in most places it's optional.
Uhaul trucks don't even have a tone and they're driven a good portion of the time by complete beginners who still are getting used to backing up correctly in a driveway let alone anywhere else.
Japan has a great collection of iconic tones that people recognize from pop culture alone so the issue just seems to be that in the US at least we don't do it because no one is required to and implementing it is seen as a nuisance.
