@cato@chaosfurs.social really common in the UK for military training areas to be pretty wilded and natural, and likewise routinely open to the public.
The military needs lots of open, natural space where no development happens. At the same time, as govt land, nature/pollution/etc regulations are generally better adhered to than private developers who have a profit motive.
