@jonmsterling I am less pessimistic about democratic project governance in the long run. But it's inherently slower than a dictator, and these projects will need a lot of time to develop a consensus on LLMs.

One problem I see is divergent views on LLMs among core contributors. I doubt that people with such divergent views can effectively collaborate. Meaning that the outcome is one group leaving the project.

@screwlisp Unix interoperability is at a very low level: character streams. Every programming system support character streams.

CL conditions are standard CL, but CL-only. Much less interoperable than character streams.

And then, even inside the CL universe, I think your scheme requires interoperable programs to use the same conditions, i.e. have a common dependency. Maybe I got that wrong though.

@screwlisp It all depends on what you consider the key features of Unix pipes to be. Chaining operations is something you can do with function calls. Is that already "the same as Unix pipes"?

For me, Unix pipes are about just-in-time composability between independently written programs. You don't get that with your condition hack because there needs to be a prior agreement on the conditions in all candidate components.

@lain_7 Indeed. There were in fact lots of practices to manage information on paper, some very sophisticated. Luhmann's Zettelkasten has become famous. Also Leibniz' paper slip cabinet, although it isn't very clear how he used it. And many others.

@aartaka If the goal is a neat copy for sending to someone, yes. For personal notes, you write with generous line spacing, and then you can do minor corrections But not what I do on my computer. Which is why I hardly write on paper any more. Just short notes like shopping lists.

@aartaka That's what Ivan Illich calls "radical monopolies" (in his 1973 book "Tools for conviviality"): technologies that people can no longer opt out of because society at large has decided to adopt them.

However, before you decide to fight against radical monopolies, keep in mind that agriculture is one as well! As are fridges, or the power grid. For me, the priority is understanding and then equilibrating the power structures that each radical monopoly creates.

@aartaka I wonder how realistic this description is. When I look at how people of my parents' generation worked (those I knew well enough), I note that they all wrote drafts by hand on paper before turning to the typewriter.

I also remember when word processing arrived in my own life, around 1983. It made my writing a lot better, because outlining first and then iteratively refining the outline is how I work best. I am not going back to typewriters!

"In some cases, hallucinated citations might serve as a sign that the entire paper is fabricated, whether by an individual or a paper mill, a business that sells authorship slots. But the extent to which fabricated papers are contributing to the fake-citation problem is unclear."

@yaxu In many disciplines, LaTeX is the worst except for everything else.

For my PhD thesis, I don't know any other tools that would have done the job. I needed not just standard mathematics, but non-standard math notation. That required writing TeX macros (not LaTeX), which is another circle of hell. But it was possible.

The people most at risk, as far as I can tell, are young professionals who pick up AI tools for fun or efficiency without much reflection.

@force11 @upstream I strongly disagree with the statement "We can’t advance open science if we don’t measure it."

There are many qualitative rather than quantitative aspects to Open Science, whose advancement does not require measuring anything. On the contrary, a focus on the measurable can detract from these aspects.

When you develop or advocate metrics, please always consider if you really expect it to do more good than harm.
