While human beings (and complex life in general) are incredibly resilient, it's also important never to forget that we are just wet bags of unthinking, unfeeling individual cells, independently burning sugar at an alarming rate to keep the lights on in the futile battle against the inevitable darkness of entropy.
Grief is a form of patriotism, too.
