Heads up. Yesterday I was messaged by a credible looking version of someone I know well IRL. They used to be active on mastodon dot social and seemed to be setting up a new account and starting over, following the accounts my friend had previously followed. The tone was just off by a fraction but everything else looked right.
I checked with her and it wasn’t her, so reported the account.
This isn’t really a tech issue, it’s cultural credulity. Someone found a dormant account and borrowed its clothes.
