@brett@bitflipp.social ours is a poorly bounded generation. The millennium was an interesting side note to a story about massive technological upheaval, that very much splits us. My sister, who is only five years younger than me, had a very different experience with technology and the internet than I did; I don’t think she’s ever even used a paper map, and may not have really memorized any phone numbers.

@dukepaaron@babka.social as a kid in New Jersey, Washington crossing the Delaware and the march to Valley Forge were local history. It never even occurred to me to question whether independence was actually the right call, probably until I was in Scotland soon after their independence referendum, and was talking to locals about their thoughts on it.
I might lean vaguely towards British control having been better for everyone other than the American colonists, but it’s so hard to even pretend to know how things would have gone when we started making major changes to the timeline.
Doc Brown warned us about this!

@dukepaaron@babka.social I’ve pondered the question of whether or not American independence was actually a good thing, but ultimately it comes down to being unknowable. The biggest argument I tend to hear in favor of remaining British was that Britain ended slavery much sooner than the US. However, part of the reason Britain was motivated to end slavery was because, having lost control of the American South, it was no longer a money-making institution for Britain. Had the American colonies remained in the Empire, it’s entirely reasonably to assume the Empire would have been happy to continue profiting off of enslaved labor.

@mgorny@social.treehouse.systems @diazona@techhub.social my favorite thing about Gentoo is that it lets me decide how things should work, and try new things. It’s like LEGO compared to a model kit.
Do I particularly care which NTP daemon my system uses? No, but I do care that I could change it if I some day decided I wanted to.
I do care that it’s not some weird or obscure choice to install a headless system with no graphics packages at all, or to build my graphical stack exactly the way I want it, and the difference is just simple configuration files that I control and can change at any time, not an entirely different install process.
And I do, of course, love that I can turn up the optimizations to wring every last processor cycle out of my hardware. In the (distant) past, using Gentoo and being able to compile my own custom kernel and graphics stack was the difference between being able to run 1080p video smoothly on ancient hardware when Ubuntu could barely play a video file at all, saving me hundreds of dollars on hardware.
