@notsle@kzoo.to @pluralistic@mamot.fr this is early in the book but I think the point about people allowed to use their judgement on when and how to use new technology liking it and those being forced is really well put. And that line between using and being used by automation is such a great one to investigate. I’m only 50 pages in so far but per usual, Cory is sharp and has a knack for really putting together ideas in a way that is insightful in a way that makes it feel obvious (in a good way)

I was so late reading “Enshittification” that @pluralistic@mamot.fr managed to crank out another book and get it edited and published. So excited for this. Also, Cory, I’m always amazed how you write so much and have it be completely worth reading. I have seen you say, “I write when I’m anxious” but two substantive books on the age we find ourselves in is mega impressive

@Em0nM4stodon I have young kids and in that sense I get the idea but the privacy and security risks are just too high. Also, kids will find a way around it. They network well and once a single dork (*raises hand*) figures it out, they’ll all be able to. They always start with things that are harder to object to. Porn, kids on social media etc. but then we end up normalizing it for everything. I don’t want that world. And I really dont for vulnerable folks.

@amcjen @pluralistic Cory has a knack for coining memorable things. Schneier’s Law and Enshittification are my favorites but tron-pilled is really good too.

@dmacphee this is such a great idea. I wonder if I could pull something like this together where I’m at.

@rbuzz@mastodon.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr I often work with large repositories and other large files. I was paying $110 for 1gig/30mbps (down/up) before and this is $90. And I can stream my media library anywhere with no buffering from my home connection and VPN my traffic through it when I’m away if needed. It’s a little overkill still for me but being able to push a 7GB file in less than 10 seconds instead of a half hour is nice.

@pluralistic@mamot.fr we recently got 8gig fiber (granted I live in Montana) and I’ve never felt so smart for buying 10 gig networking gear. 25Gbe is insane. I’d definitely be buying a bunch of used mellanox SFP28 cards and optics
