Seems like my soldering iron has a malfunction... It doesn't get hot enough :/ I was hoping to make some progress today, but seems like I have to send this thing back 6/?

Ich frage eine Mitarbeiterin im Baumarkt was und ein random Typ grätscht dazwischen, nur um erst eine falsche Antwort zu geben, und dann den Ratschlag "einfach ChatGPT fragen" zu geben. 🤷

Because I only have one PCIe power cable, I'm doing something slightly cursed: I'm putting the "wrong" end of the P8 connector I have into the other PCIe power slot to get power out of that. Because the colour coding on this connector doesn't match the PCIe connector though (and the cable is sleeved so I can't see what connects to which pin), I had to test each pin manually to see if it's live or ground. 5/?

It comes with a 6+2 pin / 6 pin PCIe power splitter. I only need one of these; as far as I understand, both have 3x12V connections. I snipped off the 6 pin here, I'll use the leftover cables as extensions. 4/?

First, to check whether everything is working as expected, I short the "PS_ON" pin on the ATX connector (otherwise the PSU doesn't do anything), then check the voltage on the CPU connector (4+4 pin) 3/?

First off, thank you to @virbonus@sueden.social for providing me with the PSU! The idea is pretty simple: combine the different 12V rails from the power supply into a single connection for high(er) current. This power supply has 4 12V rails spread across multiple pins that (according to an online source I found) provide 6A of current each. Soldering 3 of those rails with 4 pins each together should be enough to distribute the current and get the maximum possible power out of the PSU by my calculations. 2/?

Ok, in this thread I'm going to post my progress repurposing an old ATX power supply to run a (way too powerful) car amp off wall power. At this point I don't even know whether the amp works, but hopefully I'm gonna find out! You could say this is my first real electronics project. 1/? #dyi #electronics

@JMarkOckerbloom@mastodon.social @peterpur@hci.social The entire chapter looks like very obvious GPT-slop at first glance. Probably ditto for the entire book. Does nobody review anything anymore?
