Just saw claude one shot porting a suite of mocha/chai/testing-library unit tests for a vanilla web app to a vanilla runner in about ten minutes. The runner’s code is clean and minimal, the test files look a lot like the mocha version did, and the 135 tests passed on the first try.

I don’t know whether to be happy for vanilla web dev that LLMs are this good at writing that code, or sad that the time of writing code myself is coming to a close.

@jimniels I have this as well, many people do. It should be easy to fix but they don’t care enough to fix it. It seems to be a part of the gradual erosion of empathy for the user at Apple. I like Craig, he seems like a nice guy, but it is really on him to reestablish that standard of care, and he has other priorities.

Thought: what if all of the Bad Stuff (tm) in modern computing derives from putting logic in “the cloud”? If we make a hard rule that logic goes only on the device, then you can still “do AI” but the user pays for the electricity. You can “do social”, but the feeds will be opt in (like rss) instead of force fed. You can “do ads”, but they won’t be privacy-intrusive. You can “do sync” but the server will be a dumb store and it will that much harder to push eternal subscriptions.

@polotek@social.polotek.net The small apps era was all about files. Maybe we can get back to that by going back to files as the data primitive. Static web apps can access local files with the file access API or they can access cloud files with secretless client SDKs (eg dropbox has several ways to access it from a static web app). It’s not like people couldn’t share work in the files era, they just did it outside the app.

@DGI Technology is a catalyst amplifying whatever it is set on, good or bad. I think 90% of everyone, left or right, feels empathy for those who suffer and wants to use technology to make the planet a better home for humanity. The problem is really the 10% who lack empathy, who keep playing us apart, and who have been greatly helped by modern information technology in doing so. A better world does not require better technology, it requires better shared values.
