This general sense of Europe getting out of the cloud has been greatly complicated recently with astronomical energy costs in the EU. This shift where physical locations (data centers) and hardware (servers) seems far more relevant than discussions just 5 years ago. Holes in the cloud? A serious discussion of re-investment after Cloud-first and cloud-only.
In quite a strange programming decision at Gen Xfest, @brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org of the @internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org is in the graveyard slot. Last session of last day, he should’ve been peak day 2 so as many folks as possible could hear the good word. I’m staying and seating will that much easier, but why blackhole your biggest draw?

@dsalo It's really our responsibility to mitigate it for you :) We've found using tools like Anubis if particular sites are getting crushed is useful, but it is pretty much a game of whack-a-mole. We can;t block huge swaths of the internet given our business, but having pretty awesome customers who understand is always the best medicine!

@kfitz @hello I hear you on this. It's been a total nightmare for Reclaim as well, what's worse is that blocking them is a joke, no one honors it. We had a site go from 1-2 million hits on avg per month to 7-8 million hits on avg basically overnight and it's all bots. Makes running a site with significant content and history exponentially more resource intensive.
