I'm very excited about GoToSocial, so decided to take the jump and run my own instance! I'm still not completely sure how I'll balance this and my blahaj.zone account -- it's a great community, so I'm certainly not planning on leaving there, but one of the things I really like about the fediverse is the ability to have more than one account. So, we shall see! Yeah, really disappointing. The original push top-down push was primarily defensive in the aftermath of a couple of high-profile lawsuits and the concerns about more. The departure of the VP of HR who was having affairs with multiple women in the organization (including one who had been on the search committee that hired him!) opened the door for some real (albeit imperfect) changes for more positive reasons, and some of the upper management really did understand the value.
But then again there was always a lot of lip service. I know somebody from an intersectionally-marginalized background who had a great meeting with a senior exec who really listened and thanked them profusely and ended it with "if there's anything I can ever to do help just let me know". But when she got caught in a shitty situation and nobody else would make an internal offer for anything remotely at their level and actually did ask for help ... the exec didn't reply. Sigh. He's still there. She isn't. More positively though, she landed on her feet elsewhere, and is much happier now!
