A new trend I've noticed is *many* independent researchers asking for arXiv endorsement on Reddit. None of them share their drafts (until commenters demand it), just "here's my endorsement code, can you approve me for cs.SE / cs.AI?" I suspect that LLMs are encouraging this practice. Very strange.

There was an enormous boom in Boston today. I felt it as my lights flickered and speaker popped. The press say it was a meteor entering the atmosphere, creating a seismic-scale sonic shockwave as it vaporized. Blissfully unaware of the broader implications, I left to get dinner, a chill in the air and anxiety in the eyes of my neighbors. I found the pizza joint down the street and the Mexican restaurant a block further have both permanently closed. The local church and liquor store, ironically almost adjacent, have both been boarded up, offering no sanctuary by the clergy or the bottle. Police cars circled me three times, like vultures. They can sense that something sick has happened, just as I do, just as the storekeepers surely had before they fled. We are all changed now by what has entered our sky.

There’s this collapsed lamppost I pass on the way to work, and each time I go by it’s disassembled just a bit more and things are missing or splayed out across the grass. It feels like decay, watching nature reclaim life, first with scavengers, then with fungus. All the little human ants nibbling away at the lamppost carcass to support their colonies

So I can’t just mail a liquid. Like if I go to USPS with a puddle and some stamps they’ll tell me no. But what about a cardboard box filled with liquid? Is there a maximum sogginess the postal service will accept? How moist can my mail be?

People before the cell phone era had to memorize lots of phone numbers and can remember numeric sequences for friends or family. I remember my IP address through middle and high school. Why is this seared in there?

@wdormann@infosec.exchange Now that I've read the technical details, it looks like dirty frag modifies the page cache of /usr/bin/su, so forcing a reload of all cached files with echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches undoes the exploit's changes, letting you test the exploit from start again.

Yes, I just learned about both, ran the mitigation, and it's stopping Copy Fail 2, but the Dirty Frag exploit continues to work. Sorry for the tangent in the thread.

@gabboman @cwebber@social.coop I don't think that matters - the bottleneck is that with SH you need to read through all messages to determine what *is* relevant to you, while in AP you're only forwarded relevant messages to begin with based on your server's federation and following tree. Same bandwidth and computational costs, just less storage. [That's not considering making a 'feed' on BlueSky, where maybe you want to look through messages retroactively to find posts or bios containing keywords - that certainly requires storing currently irrelevant posts for future use]
