Genuinely enjoyed the article, a rare piece that covers both sides as opposed to picking one extreme. One section I think is a bit more nuanced is around energy, AI (datacenters) do use lots of power, but they are not dissimilar to a factory using widgets, which brings value. Solution seems like a way to focus on scaling power generation as opposed to imposing limits.

@sebastian@phpc.social Fair enough, thanks. It is a fairly painful error of sorts, but your point taken.

A few times now had a run-away testsuite consume all memory, in part due to the fact on CLI, php runs without a memory limit by default. @sebastian@phpc.social Any thoughts about adding default limit (even a large on 1G) to phpunit by default?

@mpe@hcommons.social The interesting bit they fine is actually for the storage of books they acquired illicitly, not actually the use of books for training, that part was confirmed as fair-use.

@Daojoan@mastodon.social Nothing wrong with "infinite content", reducing the barrier for people exercise their creativity, which imho is a great thing. Yeah, a lot of might not be great, but there without a doubt will be many great things too. And people DO talk a lot about their dreams.

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech Once you post something publicly is no longer is "your space" it becomes public discourse. You stated and I quote "That's why there's the constant claims about what AI models can supposedly do, that are debunked two days later" You made a general, blanket statement, implying lack of utility. Where in-fact there are multiple examples of claims that are true and plenty that are not. So it is a mix... When suggesting reflection, it helps to look in the mirror 1st ;-)

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech You are not obligated do no anything, but that goes both ways, I choose to engage with what I want. You choose to present a one-sided argument, it certainly has a degree of merit which I acknowledged. But it is one-side of the coin, I am pointing out there is another.

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech That was a general statement. That being said to me last 3 paragraphs in your original post seemed to indirectly imply that (at least that's how it read to me). Perhaps in-part, because there was no acknowledgment of the utility potential anywhere...

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech As I said, there is lots of money involved, so there are people with financial incentive to promote/perpetuate the hype. LLM/AIs are a tool, like most tools it is a tool with real uses and real limitations, ability to extract utility from it often depends on the operator. To dismiss the tool's utility outright, is at minimum short sighted.

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech Every tech cycle comes with its own hype cycle, which lately is mega amplified by social media. Doesn't help there are absolutely massive amounts of money involved & at stake, so there is a real financial incentive to keep it going. That being said, I personally find LLM a helpful tool for development and it is of great use to me. But that's ultimately my perspective & use-case.

EU never fails to demonstrate "democracy" in action: https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/eu-parliament-greenlights-chat-control-1-0-breyer-our-children-lose-out/ Somehow (314 against, 276 in favor, 17 abstentions), translates to motion passing...

Been getting into PHP project dev lately with lots of fixes going in, but none of that would be possible without feedback & pr reviews from other core devs. Thank you for your often thankless work
