on my way out of an estate sale in the thick of winding side street mansions, an overcast and muggy day, folk songs playing on public radio, i realized i was having a quintessentially pasadena day
When forest burns, it smells like a campfire. A cozy, and unfortunate, campfire. When buildings burn, it smells like burnt rubber. For two days the air outside smelled like campfire. Today it smells like rubber.
Overheard on TV: "Feels like the world's just stopped right now." I've been searching for words to describe what's happening but these come the closest. There is fire about 3 miles away. I wake up and the daylight is orange from ash. Ash drizzles out of the sky when you walk outside. At least I'm not smelling ash inside the house today, the wind must have shifted.
