One that comes to mind is the 5 mark note issued by imperial Germany in 1904

I grew up in Arizona and recall my father showed me a mother scorpion carrying its young on its back. It didn't rely on an underpaid au-pair or toss the scorplings into a day care so it could spend 200 hours/week pumping the stock price of Stinger Industries LLC. So the venomous arthropods understand basic care for their own kind better than the Bunker Class.
We can probably find a more witty-ironic plan like sealing the vents with molten gold anyway.

Except they're inaccessible on VERY common use cases like "desktop PC without webcam" or "public kiosk".
So we have to do terrible Rube Goldberg flows for non-smartphone users. I really don't want my digital life centered around a delicate theft-target device that's mostly a vector for funneling personal data to an American bigtech.
TOTP 2FA can be run on a freaking Commodore 64. Emailed codes are tech-agnostic.

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space Certain "feelie" aspects are definitive. One of the reasons the 5150 won was that it had an very good screen and keyboard for the time.
I wonder how we can convey this information in emulated world? Are identifying and capturing everything we'd need while we can? Even if we make a shader that captures the idiosyncracies of a specific IBM 5151, will a 45-year-old tube today match the exact behaviour it had in 1981? Will the new Model F keyboards replicate the original?

The pre-AI-bubble sales pitch for early DLSS/FSR/XeSS was "This lowend graphics card can't deliver 60/144/42069 frames per second at the desired resolution reliably, but we can fake it because smooth motion is a better experience than visual fidelity."
The image will exist for 16ms or less, so you're not expected to perform deep critical analysis on the ghosts that the machine added to the original art direction.

Ironically, I sent the morning fiddling with a laser engraver trying to burn through dye on the outer layer of keycaps to get a similar white-on-black look.
With the right materials, it's sort of doable with home gear, but not in a repeatable quality way like that. But I doubt someone called up a commercial vendor for this.

@fasterandworse "It's not Chromium" matters to technical people who understand that a monoculture steered by an adtech is a bad thing. That's a complex technical argument.
For the mainstream audience, you still need to provide some sizzle.
Some of that can be jiu-jitsuing the opposition's bad moves (keeping ad blockers as first-class citizens) but you should have something exciting in the pipeline.

@neilsardesai@mastodon.social Weren't there some systems (I'm thinking Lotus Notes) where the masking for the password field was made of glyphs derived from the keys already pressed?
This was a sort of accessibility hint-- if you saw the *pattern* you were used to you know you didn't drop or double a keystroke, even if it didn't provide visibility for the raw data.
You could like sha256 the content of the field, then map the result onto a collection of emoji, for a similar effect.

My "vintage audio" friend group doesn't need to know my "gay otaku" friend group. There are appropriate individual fora for each.
The big lacking space is that nobody built a decent family-oriented community space. Meta did it by accident by onboarding everyone, but there's not a friendly story for self-hosting and no non-skeevy commercial play.
