@virgile_rendt@piaille.fr J'ai proposé à un copain qui vit là bas ! Je lui ai envoyé le lien en parlant d'un "clarinettiste au son piquant", et puis il y a quelques jours on parlait de musiques de l'est, tout se tient !

@mahryekuh Tools and libraries that do not get in the way. As few bugs as possible (correctness), as few obstacles as possible (completeness), respect for the time that users devote to the tool, and knowledge of the users' needs (relevance and empathy). Expectable changes should not require a large rewrite. Being opinionated is not a license to raise walls.

🚀 GRDB 7.10.0 is out! This release ships the hard work of @marcprux@mastodon.social, @tjadejong@mastodon.social and Micah Moore for supporting Android, Linux, Windows, and SQLCipher with SPM (for encrypted databases).

The situation of GRDB+SQLCipher with SPM is much better, but still not all sunshine and roses. You must fork GRDB, and modify Package.swift. Instructions are in the file itself, in comments that contain "GRDB+SQLCipher".

Maybe an "official" fork will ship eventually–this is still under discussion. In all cases, SQLCipher will need a GRDB fork for several years to come, which means that all derived repositories (GRDBQuery, GRDBSnapshotTesting, SQLiteData, etc) will need to be forked as well.

What are we currently lacking in order to avoid forks?

We need Xcode to support package traits. Only package traits can reliably link GRDB with SQLite, or SQLCipher, but not both.

We also need SPM to stop downloading unused dependencies, because I do not want that your projects download SQLCipher, or declare a dependency on SQLCipher, when you do not use it. And when GRDB adds more traits for more SQLite and SQLCipher variants, I do not want that those are downloaded, too.

@__bb Great article about our choices 🙂 For GRDB, the default Date storage is similar to ISO 8601, but with a space instead of a T between the date and the time. This format is understood by SQLite, and has the extra advantage of being comparable with the CURRENT_TIMESTAMP built-in (WHERE date >= CURRENT_TIMESTAMP). I was hoping it would be the format that would create the least surprise for users who do not think about their date storage upfront, and luckily no user feedback had me regret this choice in ten years. https://github.com/groue/GRDB.swift/blob/master/README.md#date-and-datecomponents

@a_grebenyuk I like programming, telling the computer what to do. So verbose it is, because I want to tell a lot of details, but tedious it is not, because the API is well designed and welcomes my instructions!

@calicoding Exactly. No magic strings, no nibs for plain labels, just an plain and efficient API. And fantastic support for partial layout invalidation. Yeah you have to do some maths and compute stuff. Heck, that's affordable.

UIKit is fantastic. In a few hours I have a gorgeous and super fast UICollectionViewLayout subclass that displays 20000+ items in a table with sticky columns and row headers. I'm glad I'm not too rusty with UIKit. Bye-bye, SwiftUI Table, you're unfinished.

@autoreleasefool Thank you Joseph! I tried to limit the breaking changes as much as possible. Just as you say, we collectively benefit from years of experience and best practices :-) When in doubt, check the migration guide, where all the breaking changes are listed: https://github.com/groue/GRDB.swift/blob/master/Documentation/GRDB7MigrationGuide.md

🚀 GRDB 7 is out, a joint effort by ten contributors! The new version blends as well with Swift 6 concurrency as you need it, and is ready to follow you for the years to come.

Did you know 2025 marks GRDB's tenth anniversary? First commit was done on June 30.
