most of the times "Open Weights" LLMs are still nonfree, you dont have the training code, you dont have the training dataset nor data transparency and before this term started trending they would LARP their LLMs as "open source" way more, I believe people have started to use this term because the companies market their LLMs this way to make it sound more liberating when it really is not, I urge people not to fall for this
Imagine you lived in a world where it was unusual for proprietary file archiver programs such as WinRar that could be ran locally instead of only through a remote server, would you call that "Open Binary"? hell no, you wouldn't and I view the term "Open Weights" the same way
just yet another thought of how the term "Open Source" has caused confusion and harm, thank you for your attention to this matter.
