We made this free and open source app to help people take their very first steps with coding. It's been used a lot in middle schools, high schools, and online. It's part of the Godot docs' getting started series.

I left it to rest for a while as we focused on building our curriculum and platforms. Now I'm working on it again to improve it incrementally. The next version drops in January and will improve clarity for lessons where newcomers struggle the most.

@SpookyDoom@mastodon.gamedev.place @godotengine@mastodon.gamedev.place Sure, you're right that official docs should be a reliable reference. The Godot docs are already quite extensive and accurate for that purpose. They could always be improved in style and structure, for sure. It's not easy with the way it works currently, as a crowdsourced effort: on the limited availability of benevolent contributors, there's a lot of energy spent on coordination. Regarding traction or docs being the first line when working with software, actually most developers don't mainly use documentation to learn. Even when it's great and easily accessible. Many people look for tutorials, videos, and courses first. Node Essentials' great but actually niche. If we're talking about what would actually help grow Godot's user base and the quality of contributions, an official, very comprehensive education portal would be great. A place where you'd ensure quality, curation, internationalization, or even teach the open-source mindset and what people should expect of the project.

The ecosystem around Godot helps a lot of people learn it, and learners go look for all kinds of resources, so I do not think this is something that would affect traction of the project:

Whether people go to the official docs or Brackeys or GDQuest or Heartbeast or Firebelley to learn, they do learn and use Godot and this does promote Godot.

Don't get me wrong, official resources can of course have benefits: controlling Godot's branding, curating learning material, improving docs UX... but I'm sure the team behind Godot knows from the experience of Blender and their own that:

  1. They have to pick their battles

  2. The educational needs of people are nearly endless

  3. Something like GDQuest is a ton of work (and cost). It takes a team dedicated full-time to education.

  4. is probably most important for the project.

That said we're open to collab if Godot ever wants to do something big with education (without Godot having to shoulder the massive workload or cost).

We've been working on something special for you, GDLibrary: a completely free library for Godot devs

Think of it as your go-to place whenever you need help: tutorials, guides, a glossary to look up terms, and open source demos and assets to use in your games!

Here's a quick peek at what's coming.

GDScript Formatter can reorder your GDScript code for you!

Signals and variables first, then built-in Godot functions, then public and private custom functions, etc. It follows the official style guide.

It's open source, written in Rust, and runs fast.

Give it a try: https://www.gdquest.com/library/gdscript_formatter/

We made a new GDScript Formatter for Godot 4, written in Rust: https://www.gdquest.com/library/gdscript_formatter/

It runs fast enough to use on every save on a laptop.

Please give it a try, and let us know if you encounter any issue!

This project also helps improve Godot support in modern editors like Zed, Neovim, Helix, and Emacs.

Setting up pixel art graphics is pretty easy in Godot but it's not always easy to know where to look.

I compiled the most important settings to get started here: https://www.gdquest.com/library/pixel_art_setup_godot4/

Let me know if you have questions!

New Godot tutorial Learn how to create a satisfying laser beam: https://www.gdquest.com/library/laser_2d/

I'd love your thoughts on the video's style! We're looking to find a good balance between making nice videos without too much fluff, for people who already have some experience to learn from in just 5 to 10 minutes.
