@glyph@mastodon.social I also am currently working on a... book? It isn't really book-shaped yet so much as an overwrought glossary of terms defining only two terms for now, and I'm hoping once I get them all out, something about reading them back will click in a way that lets me flow them into something more resembling a narrative style that might suit a book. Stuff like "a program takes some or no input and produces some or no output." (It's supposed to be somewhere between philosophical and instructional for newbies, but I'm secretly trying to make it hit that spot where it makes everything Just Click like things did for me years ago, but I'm doing that without really remembering any particular insight that did that for me)

@glyph@mastodon.social @cczona@hachyderm.io @mttaggart@infosec.exchange I am not who you asked but I can confirm for myself that I find myself regularly doing manual arithmetic on large numbers partly to stay in the practice, partly to try and find easier ways to do it (and/or hopefully improve my general intuition about doing so), and partly out of being too lazy to reach for the nearest calculator sometimes (I know doing the arithmetic sounds _harder_ but... still).

@da_667 isn't the whole fucking reason credit scores even exist to circumvent anti-discrimination laws and rules by using arbitrary numbers that just so happen to "correlate well" with race?

@da_667 This right here, actually, is the thing that really pisses me off. Having everybody on a system where one set of 9 numbers that is effectively (1) immutable and (2) 100% dictates your financial life so therefore (3) must be kept secret, and yet nothing serious happens to anyone who is trusted to safeguard this information and completely fails in their duty to do so. I get shit happens but when the consequences are that dire for those harmed, maybe the consequences should also be dire for those that allowed and even arguably facilitated that harm after a certain point of negligence?

And then more and more businesses start to treat it as a requirement for doing business while still failing to secure it in any meaningful, reasonable way. It's fuckin' disgusting. The credit reporting bureaus themselves should have lost all credibility themselves the first Two fucking times.

@lucydev Less cryptically: you're effectively trying to do media access control, which classically has the problem that at some point, there must be human intelligible output that can, in turn, be recorded for non-human entities ("the analog hole"). You would eventually be needing to build against the Starlight Network's goals if you went far enough down the rabbit hole

@glyph This is all a component I hadn't really considered but entirely makes sense. And simultaneously reminds me of that scene in Ocean's Eleven where the one guy is trying to tell everybody why robbing a casino is a stupid fucking idea, capping the whole thing off with "and even if you *do* manage to pull all that off, *you're still in the middle of the fucking desert!*" (Which, tangentially, has become something of a metaphorical benchmark for me deciding whether it's worth doing some huge labor in general) All that to say, awesome thread 😄

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange What you're responding to _is_ the nuanced position; it's saying that, even if it _could be_ conceded that genAI uses were actually practical and useful literally all of the time with zero review required, it would still not be worth the ecological, economical, and ethical, impacts (among many others) that were incurred in its development and maintenance. It is asserting that there is a trade-off (undeniable, imo) and saying the trade-off is still a bad one; maybe not necessarily for task at hand, but for society at large, like having a thresher fueled by human blood. @zkat@toot.cat @xgranade@wandering.shop
