RE: https://swiss.social/@bsm/116877046041602945 It's quite funny that one of my two home countries, the one that usually gets very little recognition, is now all over the place, and I'm getting memes left and right. I'm having fun.

@timo@social.hetzel.net Ja genau, Plus fehlt.

@hayzam@mastodon.bsd.cafe Ah nice! I kept looking under Node -> Storage -> ZFS in the documentation. Thanks for the pointer. Maybe some kind of hint would be useful on the ZFS -> Pools page

@hayzam@mastodon.bsd.cafe Is there a way for Sylve to recognize a new zfs pool, that I didn't mention when initializing Sylve, and that was not created by it? I cannot seem to figure it out.

@jason@click.ba.it Well, the longer story is that I only chose Proxmox here because I wanted to have a GUI for ease of use (some pci pass through trickery, VNC console in the browser, etc.). Then two weeks ago @hackacad@infosec.exchange showed me that Sylve is already in a usable state, additionally my brother-in-law needs a new simple PC... So I though maybe I can move all VMs from my Hypervisor (Proxmox) to my NAS (FreeBSD+ZFS). Now I have everything I had previously but running on FreeBSD and a spare PC I can give to my brother-in-law :)

@hayzam@mastodon.bsd.cafe Interesting. Thanks for the explanation. I personally like zvols more, too and had been using them for most of my Bhyves, until I read said post. I don't recall exactly which one it was. I'm pretty sure it was one by Jim Salter. Could have been https://jrs-s.net/2018/03/13/zvol-vs-qcow2-with-kvm/ or https://klarasystems.com/articles/virtualization-showdown-freebsd-bhyve-linux-kvm/

@hayzam@mastodon.bsd.cafe What is the reason Sylve creates zvols by default? I seem to recall a blog post that showed that zvols were considerably slower that having raw VM images on disk.

Bye Bye Proxmox, hello Sylve. This was "fun". Took longer than expected because of VLANs. I thought it was MikroTik's weird VLAN implementation fucking with me *again*, but I seem to finally have that covered after years of frustration. Seems to be a bug in the new if_rge, I had to disable hwvlantag on the interface for the tagged packets to arrive on the bridge interface. Migration of the VMs was easy thanks to zfs send/recv.

@DerSash Sowas muss man immer als "unexpected learning event" sehen 😀 Ich war in solchen Situationen öfter als ich mich erinnern kann. In solchen Situationen lernt man. Hast du ein major release upgrade gemacht?
